You place your hand over the eyes of a corpse that has been dead no longer than 24 hours, and immediately become blinded for the duration. While blinded by this spell you watch the last moments of the corpse's life in reverse from the perspective of the target, beginning from the moment they died.
This spell has no effect on a corpse lacking eyes (including if the eyes have been removed post-mortem), or on a creature with no visual senses.
Really love the concept of the spell, but the flavor does not feel like a ranger spell. Cleric yes druid maybe. Heck i could see
wizard pulling this off. Otherwise nicely done.
Priests of Oghma or Deneir (can't remember which ones) had a similar spell in 3rd edition (domain spell) called Death Recall.
I would also give this to wizards and warlock (a very "witchy" thing to do) and lower it to 1st level.
This is my unpublished take on the spell:
Duration: Concentration, 10 minutes
Prerequisite: Cleric, Warlock, Wizard (School of Divination or School of Necromancy)
You touch the corpse of a humanoid that has been dead for no longer than 30 days and go into a trance. The spell brings to your mind the final minutes of the creature’s life, seeing and hearing from its own perspective in "real time".
You must remain in physical contact with the corpse the entire time. If contact or your concentration is interrupted, the spell ends and you cannot cast it again on that corpse.
Interesting! The reason I've done this with Druids and rangers in mind is that it is not limited to humanoids, which is also why I reasoned the slightly higher level. A ranger using it to see through the eyes of a dead monstrosity, or a Druid looking through the eyes of a dead owl are very in touch with those classes, hence that decision. If it were humanoids, I would absolutely agree with your assertion!
I agree on Warlocks though. Next time I update this spell I am certain I would add Warlock in there.
Thank you for taking the time to write!
It would be nice to be able to add this to a Wizard - or at least the Divination Wizard.
The Divination Wizard really lacks for Divination spells and this would be a nice one to have.
If cast at higher levels, increase its duration. Because you watch it backwards you could also see further back into the past. 4th level 10 minutes, 6th level 1 hour, 8th level Until you lose concentration.
This is a fantastic idea. I really like it. What does HB-MDM mean though?
Just homebrew - MellieDM! I find it makes it easier to sort through all of the content I have when making characters.
is this based on the old scientific theory that the last image someone sees before they die is burned into their retinas?
Rangers are hunters and trackers that employ magical techniques to better stalk their prey. It's a valuable method to learn about your quarry's combat abilities and tactics without even engaging them in battle. By the time you do come across the baddie, you are armed with knowledge of enemy's strengths and weaknesses.
No. This is D&D. D&D is fantasy. It doesn't have to be scientific.
Agree.
I'm transcribing this spell to my homebrew creations (don't worry, I won't publish it). This is really amazing, but unfortunatedly, I am not subscried to DDB, so I can't add it to my collection.
I'm going to modify this spell so it not only applies to sight, but also the other six senses.
I'm also wondering if artificers should also get this spell. Like they make a machine that looks into the target's deceased (but fresh) brain, and reads recent activity.
Seems fitting for Oath of Vengeance paladins.
