You touch a willing creature who isn't wearing armor, and a barrier of water and corn starch surrounds it until the spell ends. For any physical or force attack against the target, replace each die used in the damage roll with the die opposite its power. For example, a A D4 swaps with a D20, A D6 swaps with a D12, and a D8 swaps with a D10.
If the attack does not use a roll to determine damage, this armor has no effect.
"The harder you hit it, the more it resists!" -Famed Wizard Cornelius Oobleck, upon discovering the effects of corn starch mixed with water.

Posted Sep 25, 2018I'm not sure whether I want to destroy this, or applaud it

Posted Sep 25, 2018That's what I strive for.
By the way, see any problems with the wording? Maybe a less confusing way to describe the mechanic? Writing an entirely new mechanic like this is tricky, even if I know in my head how it should work.

Posted Sep 25, 2018No! Wording is perfectly clear, although I would say that as a third-level spell the d20-d4 should be removed (anyway what does 1d20 damage) and have the damage reduction as possibly d10=d4(+1?) d12=d6, d8=d4, and d4s are either fully negated or severely brought down

Posted Sep 25, 2018It's not just a D20-D4 though, it's also a D4-D20. You have to be careful using it around certain enemies as it can actually amplify low damage. Was that not clear? Is a tradeoff spell too underpowered for third level?

Posted Nov 4, 2018"I want to destroy this." Technically the opposite of a d20 is a d2 (a coin) which is used in D&D and yes you need to clarify this in your description, I hate this but in a laughing sense because I look at this and go meme. if you list out all of your dice you have D20 D12 D10 D8 D4 D2 which is even instead of hitting it with a D 10 and doin D10 worth of damage also this would be too powerful for a third level spell try bumping it up to 5th level or higher.

Posted Nov 4, 2018It's not supposed to be a meme (though it is silly), it's more an attempt to explore new types of mechanics nobody's really tried before. "What happens if I invert the damage instead of just reducing it? What new experiences and mistakes happen when you can survive a troll but get blown away by a drunken halfling?"
It's interesting to hear that it's overpowered, I thought such a violent tradeoff would be highly situational, or at least easy for the DM to take advantage of. Thanks for the feedback.
