You call an aspect of the Boatman for a favour. This favour can take a number of forms, as detailed below.

Call a Soul: The Boatman calls forth the Soul of the person who has been slain in the last day. You.may speak with them for 10 minutes or until dismissed. This IS their soul; unlike Speak with Dead, you can cast upon it spell that reveal or compel the truth. The Soul is considered Undead, but cannot be targeted, has no physical presence other than a general chill about their immediate area, and can take no action other than speaking.

Cost: 2 Platinum Coins per passenger and a personal item of the deceased, which are consumed.

Stow Away: You can ask for safe, ethereal passage to a brink of The Abyss, the outskirts of Avernus, the edge of the Feywild, the shores of the Shadowfell, or the Elemental Planes. He can deny you if the DM believes he would have reason to.

If he agrees, The Boatman takes a 5 day, non-stop journey to the closest position that leads to the target location. During this time, you are considered undetectable, insubstantial, unaging, you require no food or water, and you are trapped in his boat for the duration of the trip. You can speak, feel time pass, and move about the 15 foot by 10 foot boat freely, but the outside of the confines of the boat appears to you as a wide river of wispy, amorphous Souls with and an oblivion of darkness beyond it.

Upon reaching your destination, you become mortal and physical again, and your safety is no longer guarenteed.

Cost for The Abyss: A Demon's body part, 2 Platinum Coins per passenger, and a Rare magical item, which are consumed.

Cost for the Feywild: A Faerie body part or a musical instrument, 2 Platinum Coins per passenger, and a Rare magical item.

Cost for the Shadowfell: An Undead creature's body part or a withered plant, 2 Platinum Coins, and a Rare magical item.

Cost for the Nine Hells: A Devil's body part, 2 Platinum Coins per passenger, and a Rare magical item, which are consumed.

Cost for the Elemental Planes: An object that represents the plane you want to travel to, 2 Platinum Coins, and a Rare magical item.

Take Me Home: Return to a place you know reasonably well on the Material Plane that has a port, dock or riverbank near it.

Cost: 10 Platinum Coins per passenger, which are consumed.

Upon casting this spell, The Boatman leaves you and cannot be called again for 24 hours.

The Boatman is open to negotiation. The DM can decide of an alternative item is acceptable and use that instead.
