Four barbed chains of arcane energy shoot out of the caster, at up to 4 creatures within range. Each target must make a Dex saving throw or be wrapped in the barbed chain, taking 1d4 piercing damage and 2d6 bludgeoning damage, and being restrained. Targets making their saving throw take half damage and are not restrained. The caster can choose what part of the body is restrained in general terms (i.e. feet, upper legs, torso, hands, etc.). A creature targeted by more than one chain makes a saving throw for each chain targeting it. Due to the size of the chains, a small creature may not be targeted by more than one chain, and a medium creature may not be targeted by more than two. Creatures of large or bigger size require the following number of chains to target them in order to be restrained: Large = 2, Huge = 3, Gargantuan = all 4. They must fail a number of saves equal to the number of chains required to target them in order for the restrained status to take effect, and only after the damage has been done.
For the duration of the spell, each restrained target may attempt to break free (during their turn, as an action) with a Str saving throw vs the caster’s spell DC.
As an action, the caster can choose one creature currently restrained by this spell, causing the chains holding that creature to pull it up to 10’ closer to the caster. Alternatively, they can cause one of the chains holding that creature to tighten, causing 2d6 more damage to the victim. Only one creature can be affected like this per action and only one of the two effects can occur per action.
If cast using a spell slot of 4th level or above, the damage of each chain increases by 1d4 piercing and 1d6 bludgeoning per level above 3rd. If cast using a spell slot of 6th level or above, the range of the chains increases by 30’ (total, not per level).
