The holy warrior stands true against the horde, weapons clattering off of his shield, his sword biting into inhuman scaly flesh. Blood drips into his eyes and he roars the name of his god into a savage bestial face, even as his sword finds its neck. Then a cry comes from his left. Just fifteen feet away his noble and loyal companion is about to be struck by one of the Dark One's necromancers... a foul faced creature that seems to materialize out of nowhere, its hand crackling with purplish veins of light as it reaches out to grab its victim.

This cannot be. "It shall not be!" he roars. In an instant he summons his will and surges to his left, towards his friend. His trusted, if a little loud-mouthed and perhaps light-fingered friend... And suddenly he is there, hurling himself between the necromancer's hand and his friend's back without any care or consideration for his own life or well being. "The innocent will endure this day," he says, even as the purplish light crackles across his skin, causing him to arch and grit his teeth in pain.

His companion whirls around, hurling a knife at the necromancer and missing. "Why?" the little rogue asks, his eyes wide in shock and surprise at the paladin's potential sacrifice.

But the holy warrior isn't dead. He still lives. He straightens, shrugging off the necrotic energy that assaults his senses and narrows his eyes at the necromancer. "My body is my faith and it denies you this day," the Paladin announces. The creature pales, holds up its bare hands and begins backing away, as if pleading for mercy. And the paladin, spitting blood, raises his sword to deliver the only answer evil ever deserves.

Whenever a visible ally, within 15 feet of the Paladin, is about to take physical visual damage, the Paladin may use his Reaction to immediately move up to 15 feet (even if all of his or her movement that turn has been used up) and interpose him or herself between the ally and the damage, sheltering the ally from all of the damage's effects but taking the maximum possible damage that can be rolled by the attack (without the possibility of a critical) upon him or herself with no possibility of saving for half.

Resistances vs a specific damage type still apply, so if the Paladin is protecting someone from a fireball and he or she has resistance to fire, this would result in him or her taking half the maximum possible damage from the spell.
