You contact a representative of your ancestry and ask up to three questions that can be answered with a short phrase, or yes or no. You must ask your questions before the spell ends. You receive a correct answer for each question. You do not get to choose who appears, and the figure may be known or unknown to you.
Just like divine beings, deceased ancestors aren't necessarily omniscient, so you might receive "unclear" as an answer if a question pertains to information that lies beyond their knowledge. In a case where a short phrase or answer could be misleading or contrary to the ancestor's interests, the GM might offer a slightly longer answer instead.
In general, ancestors and family members are more knowledgable about historical events, geography, and specialized knowledge rather than current events. For example, if posed a question about a recent goblin clan that sprung up in the nearby forest, the ancestor may have no knowledge at all, but may have detailed knowledge on the layout of a kingdom or castle in which they once served.
If you cast the spell two or more times before finishing your next long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get no answer. The GM makes this roll in secret.
