You point your finger towards one target you can see within range and unleash a wave of deep, morbid fears upon them. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw or take 6d6 + your spellcasting modifier psychic damage. That person is frightened for 5 minutes and can repeat the saving throw on the start of their turns, ending it on 2 consecutive successes.
Not too bad. It's like Fear but is single target, damaging, doesn't make them run away, doesn't make them drop anything and has a different save mechanic. It also has longer range, lasts longer and doesn't require concentration. So maybe it's not like Fear at all?
A few tweaks can make it a better spell. You should give the target disadvantage on the saving throw to end the frightened condition. It's simpler, only shortens the duration by one round and makes more sense than requiring 2 successful saves on consecutive turns. If they make the save at the end of their turn instead, then it has the same duration.
I think the range or targeting needs fixing or you need specify what the target is frightened of. Looking at Fear, you could have range be self (80-foot radius) or specify they're frightened of you. Or you can make them afraid of themself or of everything. As is, it's not clear what the source of fear is.
I'm not seeing death involved anywhere, so the name is a bit deceptive.
+ Idea and description
- 2 consecutive successes to end the spell is a bit too much, fear usually wears of if you are behinde total cover from caster.
- it is too strong for 3rd level spell
@varg1 It does a fair bit of damage, but you do have a point.
Bragnak, thanks for the feedback! Will change it.
Consider the following:
60-foot range (ranges are usually divisible by 30, the average movement speed)
Make it a concentration for 1 minute, and the target cannot repeat the saving throw.
Make the initial damage 4d6, and deal an additional 1d6 at the end of each of the target's turns while it is frightened.
When cast using a spell slot of a higher level, the initial damage increases by 1d6 for each level above 3rd.
If you want a Fear ranged spell loom up my nightmare cloud. Its not perfect but it works
Hmm. Whats the link (Send me a PM) Please no advertising though.
this is a decent spell but I think it might be too powerful for 3rd level- maybe bring the damage down to 3d6 + spellcasting mod, or maybe increase the level.
O my good that is a bad way to die
i wish i could do this spell but i'm an elf
How so?
that's a lot of damage for a 3rd level spell
i love it
