You create a dart-like bolt of magical force which you launch at a target. Choose a creature or object you can see within range and make a ranged spell attack. On a hit they take 2d4 force damage.
At higher levels: The spell's damage increases by 2d4 when you reach 5th level (4d4), 11th level (6d4), and 17th level (8d4).
You might consider changing the higher level spell increase by 1d4 at levels 5, 11, and 17, for damage of 3d4, 4d4, and 5d4, respectively. It's somewhat overpowered for a cantrip, otherwise. I had trouble convincing my DM to let me use it at all, for that reason, and he's pretty reasonable about homebrew.
Maximum output at highest level is 8d4. This is an average of 20, min damage 8 max damage 32. Ray of Frost is 4d8 with average of 18, min damage 4 max damage 32 with effect to slow anyone hit with it. Fire Bolt is 4d10 which is an average of 22, min damage 4 max damage 40, with ability to set things on fire. Compared to other cantrips it's not overpowered at all, just trades additional effects and potentially higher damage for a slightly better min-damage and less resisted damage type. Your suggestion of 5d4 is average 13, min damage 4 and max damage 20 with no other effects would make it extremely less effective than any other attack cantrip in D&D history. I will pass on that, but thank you for the feedback and interest.
You make an excellent point, and he's allowing me to us it as written.
So..magic missile the cantrip?
What is the point of the 1st level variant then?
Magic Missile doesn't require a ranged spell attack, this cantrip does.
Thank you Vaegrim. Also, by RAW Magic Missile can only target creatures, this cantrip can work on objects too.
Fully comparing to E.B.
It's fair. E.B. has alot of support from the class it's for. E.B. has multiple chances to hit.
This is basically a weaker damage to Fire Bolt, but way less resisted.
It's could do with being more unique. Like it being 2 shots that increase. 1d4 for each. 2 different attacks. Increases by 1d4 at normal levels for cantrips.
IDK, maybe another idea for another day?
