For the next hour, you are warned before anyone attacks you or your group.   While this spell is up, you are never surprised -  always getting to act in a surprise round.  You do not quite have enough time to warn allies.

In addition, you have +5 to your initiative.  (The initiative bonus from this spell does not stack with the feat Alert, nor does it stack with any other bonus to initiative from divination spells.)  If you use a higher level spell slot, increase the initiate bonus by +2 per level (+7 to init as a 3rd level spell, + 9 as a 4th level, etc.)
