This effect repeats, no matter if the creature is allied or not. This spell cannot hit the same creature twice with a single cast. If there are multiple creatures the lightning can jump to, the target is determined randomly.

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 1st.
