You create a wall of twisting, writhing chains on a solid surface within range. These chains attempt to entangle and bludgeon all creatures within their reach. You can make the wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick, or a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall lasts for the duration.
When the wall appears, each creature within its area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 3d8 bludgeoning damage and is restrained. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and is not restrained.
When you cast the spell, select one side of the wall. Creatures ending their turn within 10 feet of this side or inside the wall, or entering this area for the first time on a turn, take 3d8 bludgeoning damage and are restrained. A creature restrained in this way may use an action to attempt to escape, making a Strength check against your spell save DC to break free. The other side of the wall deals no damage and does not restrain creatures.
Creatures on the non-damaging side of the wall have three-quarters cover from attacks originating from the other side of the wall, while creatures on the damaging side of the wall receive no such benefit. Additionally, any attempts to pass through the wall from the damaging side cost 10 feet of movement.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 4th.
