When you see a spell being cast with an "area of effect" whose focal point is within a 30' range, Arcane Deflection can be cast as a reaction to attempt to redirect the focal point of the spell away from the original caster's chosen point.  When targeting an area of effect spell, the "focal point" is considered the center of a sphere (such as Fireball), the starting point of a cone (such as Cone of Cold), or the origin point of a cube (such as Thunderwave).  When redirecting an area of effect spell, the new focal point and, when appropriate, direction must be chosen.

If the targeted spell is cast at an equal or lower level than you cast Arcane Deflection at, you must roll an ability check (using your spellcasting ability) with a DC of 12.  If the spell is cast above the level you use to cast Arcane Deflection, you must make an ability check (DC 10 + the target spell's level).  A successful ability check results in the spell's focal point moving up to 30' in any horizontal or vertical direction that you choose, and reorienting the direction of the effect (if appropriate).

If you cast Arcane Deflection at least one level above the targeted spell, the DC for the original caster's Saving Throw gets a +1 bonus for each level difference between the two spells (i.e. casting Arcane Deflection as a 7th level spell targeting a 6th level Fireball gives the DC for this saving throw a +1).  Additionally, for every level above 5th that you cast Arcane Deflection, you can move the focal point an additional 10'.

* - When an area of effect spell is cast, Arcane Deflection may be cast as a reaction to attempt to redirect that spell
