You extend your arms upward and a bright 5 foot diameter column of light extending 100 upward appears above you and moves with you. The color of the beacon is chosen by you as you cast this spell and may be any one solid color. You may change the color of the beacon on your turn as a bonus action. The light will not extend past a ceiling or object at least 5 feet on each side.
Any creatures in the path of the light must make a Dexterity saving throw or be Blinded for one minute. The beacon sheds bright light in a 30 foot radius and dim light for an additional 60 feet.
The beacon may be seen by any creature within 10 miles.

Posted Apr 18, 2022I appreciate the feedback! Here's what I concluded after having a look at Skywrite! Hopefully this can shed some light (no pun intended) on why I designed the spell this way!
Skywrite's effect can be seen for 50+ miles (based on human sight, we can see a boeing-747 flying about 55 miles in the sky) and you can convey a message, making it better for long range communication.
Beacon will allow creatures to see the light above you up to 10 miles away but no message is conveyed. This also means that enemies will know your location if they're looking for you! There are pros and cons to it, but the effects are a bit too different to compare fairly.
Personally I think 2nd level fits this spell as its effect isn't nearly as powerful as something like Sending for communication and there is already a 3rd level light spell (daylight).
Because Beacon is a 2nd level spell it can be dispelled if any of the light overlaps with the area of a Darkness spell.
