This spell allows the caster to temporarily see the emotional and personal connections between the target individuals.
When casting the spell, the caster targets two creatures they can see. For the duration, and if a relationship exists between the targeted creatures, the caster can see an ethereal, energetic tether stretched between them. Magical bonds - the kinds of which exist between some magic users and their familiars/companion animals or those created by a Charm Person/Monster or Friends spell - can also be seen using this spell.
The caster can see the entirety of a tether with a single casting, and can glean the following from the condition of the tethers between each targeted creature:
Type of Relationship/Emotional Connection - The color and quality of energy will be different depending upon the emotions involved in the relationship with the designations being at the discretion of the DM. Examples: romantic relationships might show as calming blue energy, sexual relationships as electric red, adversarial relationships as yellow and crackling with static energy, etc.
Strength of Connection - The caster is also able to discern the strength of these relationships based on the brightness and/or opacity of the ethereal tether. A brighter and/or more solid looking tether indicates a strong emotional or magical bond.
Directionality of Connection- The energy that makes up the tether will also have a directional current. In some cases, energy will flow smoothly back and forth with ease, indicating a mutual relationship. In other cases, the entire current might flow from one target to the other with little or no reciprocating flow from the second target; this indicates a one-way relationship as one might expect to find with an unrequited love.
When casting the spell at higher levels: Each increase in spell level allows the caster to target one additional individual. (Example: casting with a 3rd level slot allows caster to target 3 creatures, casting with a 4th level slot allows for 4 targets, etc.)
