You touch a dead creature that has been dead for no more than a century that isn't undead. If its soul is free and willing, it returns to inhabit the body you use for the material component. A creature brought back to life this way returns with all its hit points restored and all nonmagical afflictions cured. The creature retains all its abilities it possessed before death, including racial abilities. However, the resurrected creature's size depends on the amount of material used to create the new body.
While the creature is effectively brought back to life, the new body it inhabits is only an avatar for the spirit, and will slowly break down over the course of the next few months, with the creature gaining 1 point of exhaustion every 7 after its resurrection. These points of exhaustion can only be removed through the use of a spell such as greater restoration, after which the new body will revert back to full functioning.
Casting this spell again on the same creature every 7 days for a year will fully return the creature to life with its original body, and the creature will no longer be affected by the wasting effects of the spell.
