You throw an obsidian sphere that's the material component for this spell at a creature within range. The creature must have a challenge rating of 9 or lower or the spell fails. The creature must succeed a wisdom saving throw or be imprisoned in an extra dimensional space within the sphere. On a successful save, the spell ends and the sphere is destroyed. While trapped in the sphere, the creature is incapacitated, does not age, and does not require food, drink, air or sleep.
The imprisoned creature must make another wisdom saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it saves successfully 3 times, it escapes, the sphere is destroyed, and the spell ends. If it fails saves 3 times, it is permanently trapped in the sphere and the spell ends.
If you cast this spell using an obsidian sphere that has a creature imprisoned inside. You instead release the creature from the sphere. When released this way, the creature is friendly to you and obeys your commands. If you don't issue any commands to the creature, it defends itself from hostile creatures but otherwise takes no actions.
The creature returns to the sphere when the spell ends or when you use an action to dismiss it. If your concentration is broken, the creature doesn't return to the sphere. Instead, you lose control of the creature and it acts in accordance to its nature. If you lose control of the creature, you can use an action to have the creature make a wisdom save. On a failed save, the creature is returned to the sphere. If the spell ends while you don't control the creature, the creature does not return to the sphere and the sphere is destroyed. If the creature dies, the spell ends and the sphere is destroyed.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, the max challenge rating of a creature you can target with this spell increases by 1 for each slot level above 7th.
