You cause a chain to animate and elongate into a strong and lengthy chain within range. As a part of the action to cast this spell, make a melee spell attack against one creature within 10 feet of the chains. On a hit, the target creature takes 2d8 bludgeoning damage and is restrained. On any following turns, the target creature or another creature can use its action to break the target out of the chains, making a Strength check against your spell save DC. On a success the creature is released from the chains.
Until the spell ends, you may as an action constrict a creature restrained by the chains, to automatically deal 2d8 bludgeoning damage, or make a melee spell attack with the chains. If you control more than one bundle of chains, then you may take individual actions with each one using the same action. You cannot target a creature with a chains attack if the creature is already restrained by one of them.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you animate an additional chain for every two slot levels above 3rd.
