You animate any melee weapon appropriate for a medium size creature. You must hold the weapon during the whole casting time or the spell fails. The animated weapon has the base statistics of a Flying Sword (p. 22 Monster Manual). The animated weapon deals the same damage as the weapon you used when casting this spell. You can verbally command the animated weapon (no action required by you), it acts in combat on your turn. You can command the animated weapon to perform a simple task such as guarding a door and chopping wood, in more advanced tasks it will act according to its Intelligence and Wisdom.
If you use the spell on a magical item the animated weapon can only benefit from passive magical properties (such as +1 to attack and damage rolls) unless you choose to wield it normally.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the animated weapon's Strength, Dexterity and Constitution scores increase by 2 for each slot level above 2nd. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the spell lasts 8 hours. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the spell lasts until dispelled.
