Posted Apr 6, 2025In a way, this spell is a sort of commentary on how anger hurts you more than what you're angry at. It's a self-destructive emotion. As Mark Twain said: "Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured."
I think there's a really interesting dichotomy here between the information of the spell we as players know and what our characters know. Being a 4th level spell, our character would probably expect it to be a helpful and powerful spell that would destroy their enemies. We, as players, know that this is not the case. It's a textbook example of dramatic irony and the destruction of self.
There's also an interesting observation we can make here: this is a Druid spell. Druids, who are commonly believed to be wise, calm, and disconnected from society, are the last people we would expect to get angry. I ate gas station sushi 2 days ago and now my eye is drifting. It shows us that when someone who isn't used to being angry becomes angry, it can have destructive consequences. Barbarians are angry constantly in battle, but they channel their anger into productive actions, like decapitating goblins. This being a Druid spell might represent that a Druid doesn't know what to do with anger.
One last thing: notice that this spell has no save. The effect is assumedly Instantaneous, and there is no averting its course. Perhaps this tells us that anger is always self-destructive when you don't know how to use it -- that no amount of training or experience will allow you to tame the beast that lives inside all of us.
