If a creature other than yourself speaks at least one word aloud that you can understand, you can target them with this spell as a reaction. Choose any word they've spoken aloud within the past 6 seconds that was in a language you can understand- this word becomes the "Mystical Door Word". An illusory door with the chosen word shimmers into existence in front of you, opening as the spell appears to be cast from it.
The Dungeon Master then chooses to have some magical effect happen that is in some way related to the Mystical Door Word. For example, if the Mystical Door Word is "Run", one or many party members may suddenly be affected by the Longstrider spell, or an enemy targeted may be subject to a Dissonant Whispers. If the word is "Dragon", an accompanying squire may find themselves under the effects of a dragon breath spell for the next minute.
As a guideline for how the spell's effects will manifest, they will typically:
- Be approximately as powerful as a spell cast at the same level spell slot this was cast with, without requiring any explicit material costs or concentration if it is normally required.
- Avoid predictability, embrace chaos. DMs are encouraged to have different outcomes if the same word is targeted multiple times, or to subvert overly specific desired effects the party has.
-
Be beneficial to the caster/their allies, or harmful to the target of their allies, or at worst neutral/indirectly harmful. Anyone targeted with this spell is considered an enemy when determining its effects.
