You envelop yourself in brambles and then cause them to leap at up to 3 creatures, objects, or unoccupied spaces within range that you can see. Targeted Creatures must make on a Constitution saving throw. Constructs and skeletal Undead automatically succeed on the saving throw.
On a failure, the creature takes 6d6 piercing damage and is restrained as the brambles envelop and pierce it. On a success, the creature takes half damage and suffers no other effects. Each of the creatures that failed the saving throw is connected to you by the vines, which have the same structural strength as a rope, but can extend up to double the range of the spell before being strained. A creature that touches a connection that is extended 30 feet or more must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 piercing damage.
You can forego targeting one of the creatures to target yourself instead. If you do so, the brambles harmlessly envelop you to create an armor-like structure, you count as affected for the purposes of this spell, however, you take no damage from it and do not have your speed reduced. Creatures within 5 feet of you that make a melee attack against you take 1d6 piercing damage, also, your melee attacks deal an additional 1d6 piercing damage. Creatures grappled by you or that are grappling you take 1d6 damage at the start of their turns. These benefits also extend to objects and spaces you target.
As an action on your subsequent turns, you can cause the brambles to spring forth again as per the initial casting, targeting a number of unaffected creatures, objects, or unoccupied spaces equal to the number of currently affected creatures, objects, and spaces. You can target any creature that is within range of at least one of the affected creatures, the two creatures will be connected to each other instead of being connected to you. Additionally, you can cause the brambles to wither and fall as a bonus action on your turns, freeing an affected creature or destroying a connection.
A creature that dies under the effects of this spell becomes a grotesque statue of thorns, barbs, and natural foliage, and is still counted as affected for the duration of the spell. Connections between connected creatures that die also remain permanently.
At the start of each of its turns, affected creatures take 2d6 piercing damage as the thorns dig deeper into their body. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on success. Other creatures can attack the brambles in order to destroy them, which have 10 HP, 12 AC, and have -3 to all saving throws.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target an additional creature within range with the initial casting for each slot level above 3rd.
