You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the spell.

Altered Homebrew Rules:

When attempting to identify a magical object through the use of this spell, you determine if the object is in fact magical or not in it's current form. Each object will have a specified DC check associated with it, determined by how difficult it may be to understand the magical object, wither that be via rarity, unfamiliarity with the type of object, or particularly difficult magical objects or artifacts. For example, common magical items that the user may have some familiarity with or understanding of how it works may be a DC 5, while magical artifacts of a plane may be of a much higher DC to understand.

After the spell is finished if you pass the DC check to understand the object, you gain the following, unless otherwise noted by the DM:

  • The object's name, if applicable.
  • If the item requires attunement.
  • How many charges the object possesses, if applicable.
  • What school of magic was used to create this object.
  • How to activate the magical item, if applicable.
  • What spells, if any, are currently tied to the object through outside sources.

If you do not pass the DC check for a particular magic item, you gain no information from the spell about the magic-imbued item. DC checks can be altered according to character experience with likeminded objects, or through other means like help from professional arcanists. DCs may also be lowered to a degree if the character casting the spell has some idea of what the object they are trying to identify is, even from rumors or even reading about it in a book. All of these things can lower the DC with DM descression.

Identify can be used at any level, first through ninth, and the spell level which it is casted helps determine the outcome as listed below.

How the New Identify Works:

  1. Roll two d6 dice.
  2. Add your proficiency bonus.
  3. Add the spell level at which you are casting Identify.

The following total is used to compared to the object's identify DC.
