You attempt to tear a spirit from its body. One creature within range must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the target takes 4d8 necrotic damage and its body falls prone and becomes incapacitated while its spirit remains in its space and transforms into a specter. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and suffers no other effect.
The specter remains under your control for the duration of the spell or until it is killed, after either of which it vanishes. While the specter is under your control, you can use your bonus action to command it, determining where it will move and what actions it will take. When the specter dies, or when the spell's duration ends, the target's spirit returns to its body and it is no longer incapacitated. If the target's body is killed before the spell ends, the specter is instantly destroyed and the target's spirit vanishes to the afterlife.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th-level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 4th. Each additional target must be within 30 feet of the first.
