You trace an invisible glyph over the jewel. This glyph can only be seen by you, though detect magic will find a faint aura and see invisibility, true seeing, or similar effects reveal the glyph. Dispel magic negates the glyph without harming the jewel, otherwise the spell remains dormant until you choose to activate it.
Upon your mental command, the gemstone explodes with great force, forcing all creatures within a 20-foot radius to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they receive 5d4 points of bludgeoning damage, and taking only half as much damage on a success. This can be triggered no matter the distance between you and the jewel, however if you and the jewel are separated by a planar boundary or are killed, then the spell is immediately negated without harming the gemstone.
If the gem was carried in a chest, metal box or similar rigid and sturdy container, then the explosion is contained and no damage is inflicted on any creature outside of the container, however objects and creatures inside the container (including the container itself) must still make the save, as the force is sufficient to shred pouches, sacks, backpacks and so forth, even if such items are made of leather or other durable fabrics.
At Higher Levels. When this spell is cast using a spell slot of 4th-level or higher, then the explosion deals 2d4 more points of damage and the radius increases by 5 feet for each spell slot above 3rd.
* - (an individual, loose gemstone worth at least 500 gp, which is consumed by the spell upon explosion)
