As you cast the spell you take out the gem or creature hold it in front of you then let it float there as a green lighting ning forks from the target dealing 4d6 necromic damage and storing one fith of the health taken in the creature or gem that can now be crushed as a action to give you the stored hit points as temperature hit points added, bonouse to ac or a damage bonus to the next attack/roll.
