A 60-foot-radius sphere of light spreads out from a point you choose within range. The sphere is bright light and sheds dim light for an additional 60 feet.
If you chose a point on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried, the light shines from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the affected object with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the light.
If any of this spell's area overlaps with an area of darkness created by a spell of 3rd level or lower, the spell that created the darkness is dispelled.
Regarding how this spell doesn't actually create sunlight, merely bright light that feels like it in all the pleasant ways, I think older editions did specifically clarify that Daylight merely resembled sunlight, and to screw over drow or vampires, you'd need Sunbeam.
It does, i killed 3 vampire spawn and a full vampire with this. With everyone else attacking the vampire was dead in 1 round. Ridiculous.
I would say no. The monster stat block specifically says "sunlight". Daylight basically evokes light that simulates the light of a sunny day but isn't actual sunlight.
Your DM might have allowed this effect, but as many others have pointed out, that's not the way the spell is written or intended to be used. The spells that create "sunlight" for mechanical purposes -- like Dawn and Sunbeam -- explicitly say that the light is sunlight, and Daylight does not. Moreover, the fact that your DM allowed you to essentially nullify a combat against a CR 13 and three CR 5 monsters with one 3rd-level spell should have been a pretty big hint that they were ruling it incorrectly.
In retrospect, I can totally understand why this spell doesn't count as sunlight. It'd be kinda busted for higher level enemies such as Drow and Vampires to be completely shut down by a single 3rd level spell. That said, yes the name is very misleading.
Good job Keyleth
One of the saddest lessons a player can learn is that daylight DOES NOT create sunlight. This feels very niche as a result, it's basically a super bright version of a light spell (cantrip) that can dispel magical darkness unless some jerk cast Darkness at 4th level.
MAY THE LIGHT OF GOD BLIND YOU
Well, it does still work on a smaller selection of creatures like Shadow Demons, who just have Light Sensitivity.
When I take a long rest a shadow mastiff attacks me and I am a level 5 wizard so make spell for wizards.
I know others have covered drow and vampires, however I think the spell should probably affect creatures like the darkling, whose sensitivity specifically mentions "bright light," but not necessarily "sunlight."
This is a fairly pointless spell, its just too expensive, when most adventurers carry a bunch of torches they could light up a massive area without spending a single slot, its just too situational, it's only useful if you couldn't use torches for some reason, like if there's a lot of gas or theyre underwater, or to specifically dispel darkness, but in that case just take dispel magic, way more useful.
Based on that I would say that did a really poor job on this spell. In that way, it probably would've been much higher level, but daylight is so easy interpreted as a sunlight that it hurts not to play it as such.
Anyway, guess I have to retcon this in my campaign with vampires now ;/
In all honestly, the name of this spell is really misleading. You assume that Daylight = Sunlight because Sun=Day.
And its not like the spell says its not sunlight. You actually have to know the finer intricacies of the way D&D spells are written to realize that.
Which I suppose is a long winded way of saying that if this spell exists in the future, it should have a different name.
"Jeremy Crawford usually has the more strictly correct rulings, even if the ruling is a bit annoying" - I would not take Crawfords rules tweets as the true word of rules. He has before made blunders with things like when unarmed strikes count as wielded weapons for X ability/value with the Paladin Smite VS Monks etc.
I'd always advise speaking with your DM for clarification, as it is for your game/table and your own enjoyment.
I always rule it as daylight, as at Lvl5 you are expected to be able to fight multiple Vampire Spawn, and having a Lvl3 spell (which is an expensive cost at lvl5) to counter things like Vamp spawn is another tool to give to your party.
Also, if it isn't Daylight, its the most expensive lantern in the world.
Should be a lvl2 spell then, its a complete waste of a spell slot at Lvl3
I'd like to create an item that gives off darkness constantly. Can Daylight dispell the magic entirely from the magically enchanted item? Or just suppress it?
RAW, it wouldn't do anything, since Daylight specifies that darkness from a spell is dispelled, not a magic item.
"If you chose a point on an object you are holding or one that isn't being worn or carried".... wait, what?? How am I not carrying an object that I am holding and moving around with????
Because it doesn't say "object you are holding and also isn't being worn or carried," which no, doesn't make sense. It says OR. Something you're carrying works. Also something else not being worn or carried will also work. "Or" means only one thing need be true.
