You touch a willing creature. The target gains a flying speed of 60 feet for the duration. When the spell ends, the target falls if it is still aloft, unless it can stop the fall.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 3rd.

Bards expertise man...
That's not really that fast.
Perhaps not but the reference is good for when you're moving about a city or need to reach a close island, etc.
I look forward to the day I can cast Dispel Magic on an enemy that uses this.
It doesn't say the caster has a hover ability, so you can fall if knocked prone or have your speed reduced to 0?
You only have you maximum amount of movement. 30 walk + 60 fly doesn't equal 90 movement, it means 30 walk + 30 fly or 60 fly.
It says artificers can get this spell, if you go artillerist, you can control a nice little turrets, eventually two. So, what if you were to cast this spell on your two turrets and rain death from above?
Turrets are objects, not creatures, so this spell would not work. “You touch a willing creature”
And pixies. :)
...you fools...
As long as concentration on the spell is held, the creature will not fall
I have staff the python, if it's a touch spell, i could use this on my staff's snake form, and i could ride him until I have Elemental gift.
What source book is this in?
60' per round normal movement, but 120' per round (6 seconds) if the player "dashes" each round.
10 minutes = 600 seconds. 600 seconds / 6 seconds = 100 rounds.
100 rounds x 120' = 12,000 ft, or 2.27 miles, or 3.65 km in 10 minutes.
Just remember that when the spell ends, you drop, so players will need to find a way in game to track how long they've been flying. Unless they have a waterclock to carry along, or some kind of magical item that tracks time, I'd consider letting them make a Knowledge Nature check or Intelligence check to gauge the passage of time by the sun, or movement of the stars if they are outside, or a Wisdom check to try to use their "gut" to figure out how long they've been flying.
Sooooo I'm thinking that we might have been using this spell incorrectly, though I did base my understanding of it on what I read in various forums.
As a Wizard I've been casting this on myself as my movement and then using my action to cast other spells. I've only been considering it an action if casting it on another creature.
The DM hasn't said anything about this but he is a little bit inexperienced and I don't want to be taking advantage. I have absolutely nothing available to me in the way of bonus actions so this seemed like a fair thing to be able to do.
Thoughts?
The casting time is one action regardless of target, you cannot cast by using your movement in any circumstances. If you aren't being honest with your DM about how the spell works, you're cheating. Wizards action economy not giving them many options for bonus actions is an intentional design choice, and a part of how the class is balanced.
Okay man just settle your parts. I have already stated that I know we (WE) have been using the spell incorrectly. I 1000% do not appreciate your judgment and attitude. I was not asking for people's opinions on the morality of using the spell this way. I wanted to know people's opinion of the mechanics of using the spell this way for curiosity reasons because, AS I SAID, a veteran player suggested I choose it as my first level 4 spell and described himself having used it that way in the past. Furthermore, I also very clearly stated that we are all beginners, so how about you stow the spice and spend some time learning how to kindly and effectively communicate with other people online. This is a discussion forum, NOT a lecture hall.
You're reading into things that aren't there. Chill.
Just wondering if I'm understanding the point of your question. If you are casting this spell with your move action, then yes you are doing it wrong. However, if you are asking if the spell counts as your action on rounds after you've cast it, it does not. Once you've cast it, you use it as your movement. On subsequent rounds, you can fly as your movement, and still take an action, such as attack, shoot a bow, use an item, or cast another spell (note that you can't have two spells that require concentration active at the same time). But yes, you could cast fly, and then the next round cast Magic Missile and make yourself the D&D equivalent of an X-Wing.
If that's not what your question was referring to, and you already knew this, apologies. I wasn't sure if your question was interpreted how you meant it, and you did say you were new to this, so just double checking on what you were actually asking.
