You create a shard of ice and fling it at one creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 piercing damage. Hit or miss, the shard then explodes. The target and each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 cold damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the cold damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.
* - (a drop of water or a piece of ice)
As a DM I strongly agree - I always assume failed save for a hit target.
This spell is great for Water Genasi because they always have a drop of water handy for this spell.
Can this spell be conjured but not flung or shattered, not dealing any damage? Inquiring Druids need to know for their daily needs.
"Hit or miss, the shard then explodes. The target and each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 cold damage."
Am I to assume that if the spell attack misses, the explosion still occurs around or in the square of the intended target? Or does the knife continue on a straight line, exploding when it hits something solid or reaches maximum range and then affects creatures around it?
It stops at the target and explodes, it's thinking of it less as a, "it misses" and more as a "it is blocked by a shield" sort of mechanic. That or it reaches the designated range and explodes, if not exactly at the target but close enough for it to not be any different than it hitting.
amazing for first level
This spell was going to make me or break me... it broke me...
still a good spell though
One cool thing about this is that the larger the creature you initially attack, the larger number of squares hit by the shards.
If you attack a medium creature initially then the shards affect 8 squares around it.
If you attack a large creature initially however then the shards affect 12 squares.
And so on and so on.
I like this spell, but it would be cool if you could turn it into a temporary dagger for melee
That actually sounds like a really funny stunt to pull considering it would explode in the face of both you and your enemy after the attack
Have you found an "official ruling" anywhere on this? I can usually find a definitive answer on RAW or RAI but this one is giving our group some trouble. Thanks
i was dming for my sibling and their friends and one of them kept using fire spells and always missed. so the next campaign we did they only used ice spells and this was by far her favorite spell because it didn't matter if she hit or not it still did damage. wish there were more spells like this one.
Best level 1 spell ever. Cold is not that common of a resist, and the aoe is useful
The spell specifically states
"The target and each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 cold damage."
The TARGET and each creature within 5 feet of IT, not in a 15 foot radius centred on target or anything of the like
Hope this helps :)
Can snow be used to cast this spell? Wouldn't that count as water or ice?
I really wish that this worked with Sneak Attack, but “The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.”
SO GOOD!!!
Question: can I make the shard of ice, coat it in poison, then throw it later?
good spell
