Blazing orbs of fire plummet to the ground at four different points you can see within range. Each creature in a 40-foot-radius sphere centered on each point you choose must make a Dexterity saving throw. The sphere spreads around corners. A creature takes 20d6 fire damage and 20d6 bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature in the area of more than one fiery burst is affected only once.
The spell damages objects in the area and ignites flammable objects that aren't being worn or carried.
I mean when you think that you also get wish at this level, it's not that powerful.
RAW they are in fact magical damage. making them count as mundane damage would be homebrew. Check Sage Advice.
i did and you are correct. i have deleted my previus statement
Plus it's magic. It's not allows going to follow conventional rules. This spell allows you to make massive meteors out of nothing but a spell slot that you regain on a long rest. Logic is out the door!
this is the best 9th level spell besides wish, don't you WISH you had it!

"orbs of fire plummet to the ground"
From where? Is there a minimum amount of clearance needed? My DM is ruling that this can be cast only under an open sky, which kind of made sense when we weren't wandering through the caverns of Pandemonium.
This sounds more as your house rule for this particular spell. Since nowhere in the spell description says the clause that "Creatures killed by this spell can only be resurrected by True Resurrection". Although I can see the logic behind it (Meteors crashing unto bags of flesh and bone, makes sense). But, your comparison based on that between those two spells is kinda flawed.
This is a saving throw spell, with a major saving this score, that you can't use until level 17. Fire also is one of the damage types a lot of high level enemies have resistance or even immunity to. Most enemies worth using this spellslot on would have a high dex or legendary resistances, so realistically, this spell would only deal 10d6 magical bludgeoning damage to such a creature.
Now if you were an Order of Scribes Wizard who changed the damage type, then we can talk about a spell dealing rediculous damage.
Well the spell is really just summoning the meteors the meteors themself aren’t magical
Fireball+++++++++
An overchanneling evocation Wizard will deal 240 damage with this spell. Dear god.
edit: I now release you can’t overchannel meteor swarm
You're summoning "blazing orbs of fire". They aren't necessarily literal meteors. That could just be a descriptive name.
Each sphere hits (By my count) 200 squares. Anything with less than 40 effective health against fire/bludgeoning damage can have up to 800 killed by casting this twice...
@SSTEFIX It basically means that you can't benefit from cover. If there's a wall between you and the origin of the blast you still take full damage.
If you have a spell whose max damage can be survived by a typical barbarian running around in his undies at the same level as a caster who could cast the spell, why would "one presume" that not only is the body "irreparably mangled" as you mentioned in your more recent comment, but completely obliterated without a trace as was suggested when you asserted that nothing shy of a true resurrection would be able to revive something.
Oh you found a finger tip? Well, the 7th level resurrection can fix that no problem, and if you don't care about the new body, you can drop that to a 5th level Reincarnate. I find it far more likely, however, that if you're hit by a spell that a naked body builder can take to the face without slowing down, you might be a bit charred, but fully in tact... So a 5th level raise dead would be no problem... And since as written, Revivify is just straight better than raise dead if performed in the time limit, there's no reason a revivify spell wouldn't be able to bring back a victim of meteor swarm.
It's nonsensical to say that one spell is more overpowered than another as written because of a house rule. If we're bringing house rules into it, let's look at the "less powerful" power word kill. As was stated, it doesn't deal damage. If your health is too low, you just die. Why? What kills you? An aneurysm? I would say that would cause damage. Your body just stops working. Sounds a lot like dieing of old age to me... Maybe it accelerates your time or something. Who knows? Who cares in the world of house rules? If you die of old age, though, your only options are reincarnate (random new body) and wish.
I wonder how Enlarge/Reduce would effect the damage/area of effect of this spell
This spell will take out a Lich in one cast.
To everyone saying that it's op, you need to be level 20 to cast it so I think it's fair enough
