An invisible barrier of magical force appears and protects you. Until the start of your next turn, you have a +5 bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack, and you take no damage from magic missile.
* - which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell
Quick question: Shield has the components verbal and somatic.
This means, my Bladesinger can't use this spell while he ist dualwielding with his two scimitars, as he must using a hand to cast this spell. Is this right?
If you read the spell, you would notice a very key clause stating “including that attack”
Yes that is correct, unless you have the War Caster feat.
No. A) I don't think you can even cast "Shield" using a scroll because it is a reaction B) In general spell or magic effects don't stack from identical sources and C) You only have one Reaction per Round so you can only cast it once and as soon as you could cast it a second time it would've run out
This is not a bonus action spell. This is a reaction spell, you certainly can use an Action to Cast a Spell move out of a targets range, triggering an Attack of Opportunity, and cast Shield as a reaction. You are allowed 1 reaction / round. If you have already used your reaction this round, you are unable to cast Shield.
ow
Monk gets extra reactions, I sense shenanigans.
No, they don't. Tal'Dorie Campaign Setting is not an official source. It is published by Green Ronin Publishing, not Wizards of the Coast, and so it is 3rd party material.
With that being said, I don't think their ability is too powerful or anything. It also wouldn't matter here anyways as Shield lasts until the beginning of your next turn, and so having another reaction wouldn't do anything. Spells with the same effects also don't stack like that.
Poorly written, how can something invisible "appear". The barrier of magical force should "manifest".
Is it just me or has there been a real lack of creative effort gone into adding creative flavour to spell descriptions? It seems the 5e descriptions are 95% dry mechanics and 5% evocative imagery.

hut hut one, hut hut two
Yes it takes up 1 reaction, and not your action
Yes, you use a spell slot. No, getting attacked again does not increase your AC again. The first instance of shield last untill the start of your next turn.
Really? What ability?
I am seeing a lot of people saying one reaction a round. This is technically incorrect. It is one reaction until your next turn. So if you are in the middle of the turn order or have more that one turn in a round, you can take multiple reaction in a round.
For the first example, one before your turn, one after, all in the same round.
Will this come up in normal play? Unlikely. This is very much an edge case.
What do you guys think about allowing this spell to turn a critical hit into a regular hit, and no further effects? (In other words, you don't get the bonus to AC afterward, but it cancels the crit)
I think this is a great spell, FIRE BREATH NEGATION
Yes, regardless if it was an action/bonus action spell; cantrip or otherwise and they have not already used their reaction in that round of combat (including their turn).
Page 202 of 5e lists all the rules on the same page for Spellcasting. Bearing in mind specificity within a rule trump's other rules, especially a more generalized one, the Reaction Spell says, "If a spell can be cast as a reaction, the spell description tells you exactly when you can do so." which is more specific and direct than the Bonus Action Spell Casting directly above which applies to Spell Casting Actions w/ Bonus Action Spells. That rule doesn't really mention reactions, leaving "You can’t cast another spell during the same
turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action." the more general rule Reactions are an exception to.
I could see where people see "You can’t cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action." as 'specifically' saying "no other spells" but it goes on to focus on Action Cantrips... Thus! YES! Shield is every bit as OP as it appears, lol
Kind of surprised this doesn't scale, although that might be slightly overpowered if they use something like an 8th level spell to gain a +12 to AC.
