For the duration, no sound can be created within or pass through a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point you choose within range. Any creature or object entirely inside the sphere is immune to thunder damage, and creatures are deafened while entirely inside it. Casting a spell that includes a verbal component is impossible there.
I just realized this isn't on the Wizard's spell list. Strange. I would think, of all casters, Wizards would for sure have all the ways of shutting down another caster.
I've been playing and DM'ing since 1985 and I always thought this was on the wizard's spell list... until today.
This spell is not available to select on the character, spell pull down list. I have a Rogue Trixter and that is a illusion spell.
This is not great at stopping spellcasters on its own. With a radius of 20 ft., a caster can just use their movement to get out of it if it is centered on them. Of course, you can try to lead them and place them on the edge so the have to move 40 ft. to get out of it, but there is no guarantee that they would travel that way.
You need help. Like a barbarian grappling the caster. That will lockdown the caster in the radius taking away a good chunk of spells from them. Especially misty step which most casters keep to get out of grapples and melee.
Both of these points are addressed in the general rules that apply to all spellcasting.

You are not wrong, I played a game where I could cast it on a person, this was in a 2e off set
Tatsutiamat it is spelled "ritually" not "rutualy"
Its kind of funny that the spell silence requires verbal components
Considering it completely screws all casters except sorcerers, I’d say it’s insane. If you have a grappler then there’s no chance for them
So could you cast this "on a point you choose" and have it cast on an object and the spell moves with the object? I just leveled up into a cleric that can now use this and would like to have a definitive answer for its first use.
Spells that can target a creature or object say that. So RAW, silence can only target a point in space. As always, talk to your DM if a different house rule would be more fun for you.
I cast Silence. On caster's turn he moves 11' to get out of radius and starts casting Spells.
I want to be able to cast on a person/Item. Not tag team to prevent caster from moving and then cast silence.
A Silence spell is cast on a point on the deck of a ship at sea. Does the spell move with the ship or does the ship move out from under the spell?
What if the point is on the back of a Giant Dragon Turtle that seems like an island?
What if the point is on the battle house being carried on the back of a Mûmakil?
If the point is cast on the surface of the earth does the earth rotate underneath the point? Orbit away ( or through ) it?
How about a moon or an asteroid or the Death Star?
In a recent game, the Silence spell was cast on a point on the deck of a moving ship and the number of opinions of what was going to happen exceeded the number of players (and DM) at the table.
In the silence of space nobody can hear your screams :)
For when you need a discrete assassination, or simply move a heavy object
Okay so i need some help from others. My party consist of 3 people (me being one of them) and we are encountering an black ooze. It cannot be deafend but the cleric has Silence prepared. Now here is the question: If we cast this on the ooze with us being in the circle, would he not be able to see since he usen blindsight to see BUT because we cannot make sound he cant see us? In my head i think he cant see us since it needs to hear us to see and the ooze is not deafend but simply not able to hear sounds within the radius of the spell. Is this true?
so he is silent but deadly? :D
I'm going to take this with my scribes wizard using adept of the red robes. Then I'm going to change the damage immunity to whatever type the enemy is outputting, like slashing, a good way to both protect the party from damage and silence any casters. If I stand in it they can't even break the concentration easily. And if I take subtle spell at lvl 8... with Metamagic adept, I can cast inside it.
Want to know something funny? If the party casts silence catching a mage off-guard, the mage can still cast counterspell while inside the silence spell against the party.
