Thunder
You create a burst of thunderous sound that can be heard up to 100 feet away. Each creature within range, other than you, must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or take 1d6 thunder damage.
The spell’s damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).
its magic not realism
If the distance is 5 feet, can distant spell be applied on it? since is not categorized as self(5ft diameter) can Tunderclap be augmented by distant spell since it can't be twined?
Does anyone know what D&D spell card pack I can find thunder clap in? I’m playing as a Druid and can’t find it in the Druid or Arcane pack
For some reason, i can only imagine the Bard pulling out a set of bagpipes and blasting away and casting this repeatedly as a distraction so that everyone within 100 feet of them hears obscenely loud bagpipe music. either that or they use Thunderwave, so that its a 300 foot bagpipe boom.
My guy, this is a game where you can play as a giant bird who can kill people in their dreams using the power from a cursed sword they found in a dragons lair, yet your issue is that the fictional spells aren't completely accurate to their real world inspirations when it comes to the noise they make?
Thanks you hot daddy
I disagree.
From the PHB regarding range:
"Other spells, such as the shield spell, affect only you. These spells have a range of self.
Spells that create cones or lines of effect that originate from you also have a range of self, indicating that the origin point of the spell’s effect must be you"
Even Thunderwave has a range of self/15'. So as I read Thunderclap you could indeed put the origin 5' in front of you. You would still be inside the area of effect (and anyone to either side of you) but it would extend 10' further in front of you.
nice clap, get slapped
Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. Sword Burst is similar, but its range is: "Self/5ft".
Bit late in the game, but I have it in my "Elemental" card pack.
the only difference between this spell and sword burst is this procs a CON save rather than DEX and it makes sound. Sword Burst is already a bad spell, but this one is just worse because in a game centered around dungeon crawls a loud sound that carries for 100 feet is gonna draw the attention of everything nearby in the dungeon while you're already in combat. You'd think that with a stipulation like that it'd AT THE VERY LEAST do d8's for damage.
I like the idea and it's a very cool flavorful spell, but useless/extremely niche in combat.
This is clearly another botched wording. It probably only was meant to do damage within 5' because it's only a cantrip and 100' AoE would be really op. But as it's written, it's very ambiguous.
Yes is it 5ft sphere, square, circle, what? Plz clarify
Let's tear this spell apart to get some answers. "You create a burst of thunderous sound that can be heard up to 100 feet away. " "You" and "burst" are the keywords here, it is a burst effect that emanates from the caster, and it can be "heard" 100ft away, not that the damaging effect goes 100ft. "Each creature within range, other than you," confirming the caster is always in the area of effect, so the spell is always centered on the caster and everything within 5' of them, basically all the surrounding squares to you are affected, and perhaps any creature that might be in your square as well. Regardless of ears being outside of this effect since it is thunder damage "A concussive burst of sound", the body is concussed for the damage and not that you have to actually have it enter your ear holes. I think the main confusion here is "burst", which was introduced in 3E, P149 and had a very specific meaning and that meaning has not been RAWed into 5E yet. This seems to be the best reading of the spell considering it is a Cantrip so should only do moderate amounts of damage and is steadily repeatable.
I would rule it affects every square touching the caster's square since the effect emanates from the caster.
5 foot range, that's horrible. Of course if you are just mad at every at the poker table, then it would be okay.
