Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

It is appointed for all creatures to die once. Sometimes called Tomb Keepers, these paladins believe in the sanctity that is the passing from life to death. Those that have died deserve an eternal, peaceful rest. They guard the gate to the afterlife, letting none enter before their time, nor none leave improperly.

Paladins of the Oath of Mortality have a strong connection to the passage between life and death, using it themselves solely for the purpose of properly guarding it. These paladins recognize that which many other would not understand of them: they too have a time to pass on. The moment they seek to prolong their lives for their own sakes, they have gone against the very oaths they took. These paladins seek to ensure the lives of others are properly fulfilled, and no life lingers past its purpose. They do not decide another's time, they recognize and enforce it.

TENETS OF MORTALITY

The tenets of this oath seem simple, yet are easily overlooked if not vigilantly followed. Though many may differ on what would mark one's time, all paladins of this oath agree on the tenets.

None Before Their Time. The greatest affront to life is dying before one's time. Be it the accomplishing of a lifelong goal, the cementing of a legacy, or simply the satisfaction of life thus lived, you are to let none die or stay dead if their purpose in life is yet incomplete.

None Beyond Their Time. The greatest affront to death is persisting beyond one's time. Be it existing as undead, extending one's life for no purpose beyond avoiding death, or simply clinging to a wretched life that was meant to have a peaceful death prior, you are to let none live or remain animate if their purpose in life has since been completed.

Accept Your Time. Your task is one that has no end, yet an end exists for you. Do not die before your time, but do not linger beyond it. Live a full, fulfilling life. Then pass the task to those who come after.

Oath of Mortality Spells

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

Deny Death. You can use your Channel Divinity to revitalize your body. While dead, you can use a bonus action on your turn to return to life, regaining half of your hit points. If you did not have a use of Channel Divinity available upon death, you cannot use this ability.

Preserve Life. You can use your Channel Divinity to safeguard another from death before their time. When a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is reduced to 0 hit points, you can use your reaction to bring them to 1 hit point instead. If the creature is unwilling to live, this ability fails, and your Channel Divinity is not used.

Aura of Fate

Starting at 7th level, you constantly emanate an aura that fends off death from those who've yet time, and life from those who's time has passed. While you are conscious, the aura extends 10 feet from you in every direction. Dead creatures of your choice within the aura cannot be brought back to life nor reanimated as undead.

In addition, when a creature of your choice starts its turn within the Aura with 0 hit points, it can use its action to regain 1 hit point, while also gaining one level of Exhaustion. The creature cannot use this action if it died of Exhaustion.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Unyielding Rejuvenation

Starting at level 15, any time you revive to life after having been dead, you are immune to all damage until the beginning of your next turn.

Additionally, you suffer none of the detriments of old age, including death by age. Your time will come, but not quietly in the night.

Immortal Guardian

At 20th level, nothing can stop you. It is not your time to die. As an action, you magically become a sentinel of death's door, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • Upon hitting 0 hit points, you can immediately use your Deny Death Channel Divinity option without using any action. This counts as dying and being revived.
  • Using Deny Death during this time does not expend a use of your Channel Divinity.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a 5th-level spell slot to use it again.
