Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Paladins who swear an Oath of the Penniless have taken upon themselves a life of frugality. They do not carry money, and their equipment is only the simplest, their strength flows from their conviction and loyalty to their oath. Numerous deities might support such an oath, including Ilmater, Torm, Kord, Rao, Trithereon, Majere, Sirrion, Dol Dorn, Belenus, Athena, Nike, Sif, Thor, and many others not mentioned here. These knights often have difficult lives, but those who swear the oath proclaim the great wonders of adopting the oath.

Tenets of the Oath of the Penniless

Deny the Lure of Riches: You may not spend hoard or spend riches for anything other than your basic upkeep. While you may accept monetary rewards from those who can afford to, you are expected to spend all but what you need to sustain yourself for the benefit of others.

Frugality: When spending time in a town, you must find the simplest accommodations offered. You may accept a gift of lodging or food from a benefactor unless such a gift would seriously impact their own ability to care for themselves, but be wary of attempts to sway you with lavish spending.

Help your Peers: You have taken this lifestyle as an oath, however others live your life not out of choice. Support those who have little with which to support themselves.

Simplicity of Arms: You may not purchase or wear any but the lightest armor, though you may carry a shield. You may not purchase weapons for exorbitant prices. There are weapons of great power that exist in this world, and though the world places great worth on them, you know their utility is what matters. You may take up a weapon found in your journeys for your own use, or may sell it for the benefit of others. Alternatively, if you find someone in need of the item, you should give it to them without expectation.

Arms of the Humble

At 3rd level, when you take this subclass, you gain familiarity fighting without armor. While not wearing armor, your AC is equal to 10 + Dexterity Modifier + Charisma Modifier. You can still carry a shield and gain the benefit of this feature. You lose your proficiency in medium and heavy armor.

Additionally, you are granted extra power when fighting with the humblest of weapons. When you hit an enemy with a weapon attack from a humble weapon, you may add additional damage of the weapon's type to the roll, determined by your level in Paladin. At 3rd level, you can add 1d4 to the weapon's damage. At 7th level your dice increases to a d6. At 15th level, the dice increases to 1d10. At 20th level, the damage increases to 2d6.

Humble weapons include all Simple Weapons, and the following Martial weapons: Pikes, Tridents, War Picks, Whips, and Blowguns.

Oath Spells

You gain Oath spells at the Paladin Levels listed in the Oath of the Penniless Spells Table. See Sacred Oath class feature to see how Oath Spells Work.

3rd

zephyr strike, shield of faith

5th

Channel Divinity

You gain the following two Channel Divinity options. See the Sacred Oath class feature for how Channel Divinity works.

And Rags were their Armor. Your faith further shields you from harm. You may expend your Channel Divinity after you take damage to grant yourself resistance to one of those damage types for the rest of your turn.

And the Trappings of Wealth Fell to Pieces. All but the most mighty of equipment cannot hold against your righteous cause. When you roll a critical hit on an attack roll, you may attempt to sunder a piece of equipment your enemy is wearing or carrying. If the item you choose is non-magical, the item is broken. For non magical items, you make a Charisma Check against a DC determined by the rarity of the magical item.

Common: DC 10 Charisma Check

Uncommon: DC 12 Charisma Check

Rare: DC 15 Charisma Check

Very Rare: DC 18 Charisma Check

Legendary: DC 22 Charisma Check

Artifacts cannot be sundered in this manner. Similarly, the DM may rule that an item cannot be sundered in this manner, if this is the case, you may recharge your channel divinity or choose a different item to attempt to sunder.

The enemy can no longer get the benefit of using the item. The item is irrevocably broken however, and any magical effect on it is fully dispelled.

Aura of Humble Might

Starting at 7th level, your faith empowers even the slightest of weapons. While you are not incapacitated, you emanate an aura that extends in a 10 foot radius from you in every direction but not through full cover.

For you and any allies you choose within your radius, any melee weapon attacks count as magical for the purposes of overcoming resistance. Additionally, all stealth checks made by creatures you choose within your aura are made with advantage.

At 18th level the radius of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Purity of Heart

Starting at 15th level, once per turn when you damage an opponent, you may heal one ally within 30 feet of you for 1d6+your Charisma Modifier in Hit Points.

Unburdened Warrior

At 20th level, you can invoke your vow to become a paragon upon the field. As an action you can thus invoke your vow, gaining the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You have resistance to all damage. If you use your Channel Divinity And Rags were their Armor., you gain immunity to the selected damage type, rather than resistance.
  • Your walking speed increases by 15 feet.
  • You have advantage on attack rolls against enemies with a higher armor class than your own.

Once you have used this feature, you cannot do so again until you have taken a Long Rest.
