Base Class: Barbarian
A rage mage taps into the primal essence of magic, using her own natural anger and frenzy to channel the arcane power in flashy, flamboyant ways. Combining their brute strength and connection to the arcane arts, a spell-flinging barbarian is something most fierce and dangerous.
Path of the Rage Mage Features
| Barbarian Level | Feature |
|---|---|
| 3rd | Spellcasting, Spell Rage |
| 6th | Angry Spell |
| 10th | Spell Fury |
| 14th | Primal Power |
Spellcasting
When you reach 3rd level, you augment your martial prowess with the ability to cast spells. See Spells Rules for the general rules of spellcasting and the Spells Listing for the sorcerer spell list.
Cantrips
You learn two cantrips of your choice from the sorcerer spell list. You learn an additional sorcerer cantrip of your choice at 10th level.
Spell Slots
The Rage Mage Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
For example, if you know the 1st-level spell shield and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast shield using either slot.
Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher
You know three 1st-level sorcerer spells of your choice, two of which you must choose from the abjuration and evocation spells on the sorcerer spell list.
The Spells Known column of the Rage Mage Spellcasting table shows when you learn more sorcerer spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be an abjuration or evocation spell of your choice, and must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.
The spells you learn at 8th, 14th, and 20th level can come from any school of magic.
Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the sorcerer spells you know with another spell of your choice from the sorcerer spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots, and it must be an abjuration or evocation spell, unless you’re replacing the spell you gained at 3rd, 8th, 14th, or 20th level from any school of magic.
Spellcasting Ability
Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your sorcerer spells, so you use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability.. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a sorcerer spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spell Rage
Beginning at 3rd level, you can cast and concentrate on spells while raging, as long as the spell's casting time is no more than an action.
Angry Spell
Beginning at 6th level, while raging, you can add your rage damage bonus to one damage roll of any evocation spell you cast.
Spell Fury
Beginning at 10th level, when you take the Attack action on your turn, you can cast one cantrip as a bonus action.
Primal Power
Starting at 14th level, when you cast a spell that deals damage, you can deal maximum damage with that spell while you are raging. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Posted Sep 23, 2019Thanks! I'm actually in the process of revamping this one. I originally planned to look at the 3e wilder for inspiration, but with things like the UA psionic sorcerer trickling down I've been waiting to do anything psionics-related. In all likelihood psionics will be introduced as a series of subclasses, in which case there will be an official psionic barbarian somewhere down the line.

Posted Sep 19, 2019Great mechanics, but think it's missing roleplay potential in reasons behind this rager. But once they have a stronger concept and direction with Psionics, I would love to see you make a Wilder Version of this class. Your rage causing Psionic attacks and reactions thematically seems so cool. I have a homebrew version of Psionics with a great concept and balance in comparison to the UA. But I can see you making a fantastic homebrew of this.

Posted Apr 12, 2019Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you're taking it out for a spin. The original idea existed in 3.5e and I simply tried to port it to 5e. Yes, the idea is that spell rage is an additional feature of raging, so resistances would apply. As for spell fury, it's a comparable trait to the eldritch knight's "war magic" feature. Most spells take an action to cast, including cantrips, so there's still a benefit. You're right that for cantrips that only take a bonus action to cast, there's no added benefit.

Posted Apr 7, 2019Are you only able to cast spells when you rage? Do the normal bonus of damage resistance apply while raging?
I've been playing my Barbarian that way, thus at 4th level he can only access his rage magic 3x per day (or long rest). It was really put a strategic twist into his decision to rage or not. Previously, he was a Barbarian Sorcerer and I retcon'd him to this sub-class as he seemed way to powerful and binary to either rage attack or magic.
SPELL FURY: As I understand spell casting, you are already able to cast a level 1+ spell as your action, and a cantrip as a bonus action? As the Spell Fury at 10th level seems to grant you nothing. I would suggest the targets of spells receive disadvantage on saves, and/or saves to nullify damage now take half damage.
