Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

Your innate magic comes from the wild forces of chaos that underlie the order of creation. You might have endured exposure to some form of raw magic, perhaps through a planar portal leading to Limbo, the Elemental Planes, or the mysterious Far Realm. Perhaps you were blessed by a powerful fey creature or marked by a demon. Or your magic could be a fluke of your birth, with no apparent cause or reason. However it came to be, this chaotic magic churns within you, waiting for any outlet.

Chaos Magic Surge

Starting when you choose this origin at 1st level, your spellcasting can unleash surges of untamed magic. Immediately after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher, you add the level of the spell to your Surge Counter. Each added spell level to your Surge Counter increases the chance that a spell you cast critically hits as well as each spell you cast causing a Backlash. When a spell you cast causes a Backlash, you suffer damage equal to the base damage roll of the spell. The maximum amount of your Surge Counter is 10 and you lose 1 point of your Surge Counter each round that you do not use a spell slot. You reset your Surge Counter to 0 after a short or long rest.

For example, if you cast a 1st level spell and increase your Surge Counter to 1, your spell attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19-20 and your chance for a Backlash to occur on a roll of 1. If you then cast a 2nd level spell and increase your Surge Counter to 3, your spell attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 17-20 and your chance for a Backlash to occur on a roll of 1-3.

Resilient Chaos

Your skin is covered by scars and burns from the magical energy of your backlashes. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC equals 13 + your Dexterity modifier.

Additionally, it causes you to grow accustomed to the pain. At 1st level, your hit point maximum increases by 1 and increases by 1 again whenever you gain a level in this class.

Bend Chaos

Starting at 6th level, you have the ability to bend and manipulate the energy of your chaos magic. You can transform unexpended sorcery points, to a maximum of 5, into additional or reduced points to your Surge Counter as a bonus action on your turn. For instance, you can choose to transform 1 sorcery point to increase or decrease your Surge Counter by 1.

Controlled Chaos

At 14th level, you gain a modicum of control over the surges of your chaos magic. Whenever you cast a spell that increases your Surge Counter, you can choose to increase it by 1/2 (rounded down) of the spell level cast or increase it by double the level of the spell cast.

Chaotic Bombardment

Beginning at 18th level, the harmful energy of your spells intensifies. When you roll damage for a spell and roll the highest number possible on any of the dice, choose one of those dice, roll it again and add that roll to the damage. You can use the feature only once per turn.
