Paladin
Base Class: Paladin

Paladins of the Oath of Anguish are, more often than not, broken people. Some are victims of circumstance, having known nothing but suffering since birth. Others believe pain to be sacred and embrace it as an act of piety and dedication. Others still often find nothing but joy in hurting people.

No matter their reason, those that take this oath choose not to shy away from the pain and sorrow that plagues the world, but to embrace it. To that end, they place themselves at the front lines and welcome wounds with open arms, only to retaliate with an intensity that shakes the entire battlefield.

Channel Divinity

When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following options for your Channel Divinity.

Lone Martyr. You can use your Channel Divinity to focus your enemies' attacks on yourself. As an action, you can release a miasma that affects all hostile creatures within 20 ft. of you - all creatures within this miasma must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, they cannot attack any creature other than you for the next minute. An affected creature can repeat its saving throw at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success.

Wretched Soul. You can use your Channel Divinity to mark a creature's soul for torment. As a bonus action, you can mark a creature within 30 ft. of you. Until the start of your next turn, whenever the marked creature is hit by a weapon attack, they can take an additional 1d6 necrotic damage. This increases to 2d6 if the attack itself deals necrotic damage.

Aura of Suffering

At 7th level, you emit an unsettling aura that draws in pain from your surroundings, empowering you all the while.

When a friendly creature within 10 ft. of you is hit by an attack, you can use your reaction to grant them resistance to the damage from that attack, taking the same amount of damage that they do. Additionally, the next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you deal bonus damage of the weapon's damage type equal to half the damage you took.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 ft.

Zealous Empowerment

Starting at 15th level, your embracement of suffering can sharpen your focus in the midst of combat.

As a bonus action, you can choose to take 2d8 necrotic damage, which cannot be reduced in any way. Doing so grants you a bonus to attack rolls equal to half the damage taken (rounded up) until the start of your next turn.

Holy Martyr

At 20th level, you are able to manifest the pain you endure as a horrifying transformation, forcing all that stand against you to participate in your sacred rites of suffering.

As an action, you can transform for the next minute, and gain the following benefits:

  • All attacks made against any creature other than you within 20 ft. of you are made with disadvantage.
  • Any creature within 20 ft. of you that attempts to move away from you must make a Wisdom saving throw in order to do so.
  • Whenever a hostile creature hits you with an attack, all hostile creatures within 20 ft. of you take half as much damage as you do.

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
