Monk
Base Class: Monk

The Way of the Brush teaches monks to hone their artistic skills and harmonize them with their body. Monks who train in this way learn to move with incredible grace in combat, able to deliver swift but decisive blows with a sweep of their magically enhanced staves like a brush on a canvas. Training in calligraphy offers them the ability to create magical scrolls in which they store their own ki to enhance their body and mind.

Through the patient study of art monks learn to expand their horizons, learning to take greater control over their body and mind- able to turn mistakes into opportunities and keep a peaceful mind through the most stressful of situations. Those who master the Way of the Brush will dance effortlessly across the battlefield, painting a beautiful picture with their body's movement as their foes fall around them.

Scrollsmaster

When you choose this subclass at 3rd level, you hone your training in calligraphy, able to harness the ki of the world in your writings.

You gain proficiency in calligrapher's supplies, and when you make a skill check with these tools you double your proficiency bonus. You also learn to create scrolls, which stores power you can release in times of need.

You learn how to create two  scrolls of your choice at 3rd level, from among the list of scrolls detailed below, and each time you gain a level in this class you can replace one scroll you know with a different one. When you reach certain levels in this class you learn additional scrolls, as shown in the Scrolls Known Table.

Scrolls Known
Monk Level Number of Scrolls
3rd 2
6th 3
11th 4
17th 5

Whenever you finish a Short or Long Rest you can create a number of scrolls equal to the number of scrolls you know. You can make the same scroll several times or make different ones, the choice is yours. The scrolls must be written with calligrapher's supplies occupying an entire sheet or parchment worth at least 1 Silver Piece. The scroll's magic is kept until it is recited as a Bonus Action, you make another scroll at the end of a Short or Long Rest, or you use a Bonus Action to destroy the scroll and its magic.

The following scrolls are available to you when you learn a scroll. If a scroll has a level requirement, you must be of at least that level in this class to learn it. If a scroll requires a saving throw, it uses your ki save DC.

Scroll of Agility

6th level required

The scripture on the scroll is slanted and rushed, as if written hastily, but it still keeps a sense of grace in its calligraphy.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute your speed increases by 10 feet and creatures have disadvantage on opportunity attacks made against you.

Scroll of Insight

The ink on this scroll is difficult to decipher, as if many layers of texts are written over each other.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute you have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks, and when you make an attack against a creature you can choose to have advantage on the attack roll before you roll it. You can do this only once on each of your turns.

Scroll of Patience

This scroll has a simple scripture, allowing it to be read with ease and tranquility.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute attacks against you cannot benefit from advantage, and if you have not taken the Attack action on your last turn, you gain the benefits of the Dodge action until the start of your next turn.

Scroll of Peace

6th level required

The ink on the scroll has clearly been written in soft, graceful movements, and the scripture's content is calm and relaxing.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute you have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks and on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Scroll of Power

The ink on the scroll seems to glow and pulse with power, as if waiting to be let out.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) checks, and once on each turn when you hit a target with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon, you can add an additional martial arts die to the damage of the attack.

Scroll of Resilience

6th level required

The ink on the scroll is thick and large, as if great care has been put to have the scripture withstand the test of time.

As a Bonus Action you recite the scroll to gain its benefits, and the scroll is destroyed in the process. For 1 minute you can reduce an instance of damage that you take by an amount equal to 1d6 + your Wisdom modifier (no action required). You can do this no more than once per turn.

Be the Brush

Starting at 3rd level, you learn to expand the art of painting into combat. You gain proficiency with painter's supplies and you learn the Shillelagh cantrip, which uses Wisdom as your spellcasting ability. Inaddition, when you use Flurry of Blows you can replace one of the unarmed strikes with a weapon attack under the effects of Shillelagh. Alternatively you can replace both unarmed strikes to make that attack with one of the following effects added onto it, using your ki save DC when needed:

Dabbling Blow. When you hit, you can force the target to succeed on a Dexterity saving throw of be blinded until the start of its turn.

Sweeping Brush. When you hit, you can force the target to succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.

Swift Strokes. If you hit, you can make one additional attack with that weapon.

Happy Accidents

Starting at 6th level you learn to use mistakes to your advantage, from the smallest drop of ink from your brush to a splatter of paint on a canvas. When you make a skill check using calligrapher's supplies or painter's supplies, you can roll an additional d20 and choose which result to use.

Similarly, you learn to turn your mistakes in combats into potential successes. Once on each of your turns when you miss with a melee attack you can choose to reroll the attack against a different target within your reach.

Graceful Mind

Starting at 11th level your training in the arts of the brush has deepened the control of your own mind through patient practice. You gain a bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma saving throws equal to your Wisdom modifier.

Dance of the Brush

At 17th level you have mastered harmonizing your artistic skills in combat. As a Bonus Action on your turn you can spend 5 ki points to perform a dance on the battlefield for 1 minute, striking anyone in your path. Henceforth, when you take the  Attack action, you can make one attack against any number of targets within your reach. If you use Flurry of Blows while the dance is active you can instead make one unarmed strike against any number of targets within your reach instead of your usual two attacks. If you replace those attacks with your Be the Brush feature, you can instead make one attack with the weapon against any number of targets within your reach, and can apply one of the effects outlined in that feature against every target (the effect needn't be the same for each target).

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it until you complete a Long Rest or you spend 5 additional ki points (on top of the base cost).
