Base Class: Monk
This revised version is meant to try and fix existing flaws in the original subclass.
Monks of the Way of the Sun Soul learn to channel their own life energy into searing bolts of light. They teach that meditation can unlock the ability to unleash the indomitable light shed by the soul of every living creature.
Radiant Sun Bolt
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you can hurl searing bolts of magical radiance.
Whenever you take the Attack action, you can manifest bolts of magical radiance from your free hands as part of each attack and make the attack with it. This magic bolt is a simple ranged weapon with the finesse, light and thrown properties and counts as a monk weapon for you. It has a normal range of 30 feet and a long range of 60 feet, and on a hit, it deals radiant damage equal to your Martial Arts die plus the ability modifier you used for the attack roll. The bolt vanishes immediately after it hits or misses its target.
After you take the Attack action or spend at least 1 ki point as part of your action on your turn, you can make a ranged weapon attack with a bolt as a bonus action on the same turn.
Searing Soul
At 3th level, you gain the ability to channel your ki into searing waves of energy. This is represented by spells you learn when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Sun Soul spells table. Each spell counts as a ki feature for you and uses your ki save DC for its saving throw DC.
As an action on your turn, you may use your own body as a spellcasting focus and cast any Sun Soul spell you know by spending a number of ki points equal to 1 + the level at which you wish to cast the spell. The maximum number of ki points you may spend this way is equal to your proficiency bonus.
| Sun Soul spells | |
|---|---|
| Monk Level | Spell |
| 3rd | Burning Hands |
| 6th | Aganazzar's Scorcher |
| 11th | Fireball |
| 17th | Wall of Fire |
Searing Arc Strike
At 6th level, you can augment your ability to channel waves of energy with combat styles that use various fighting stances and breathing techniques as somatic and verbal spell components.
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can cast one of your Sun Soul spells in place of one of those attacks with the same cost of ki points as you would normally spend to cast it as an action.
In addition, immediately after you take the Attack action or spend at least 1 ki point as part of your action on your turn, you can cast a Sun Soul spell as a bonus action with the same cost of ki points as you would normally spend to cast it as an action.
You can not cast the same Sun Soul spell more than once per turn.
Searing Sunburst
At 11th level, you gain the ability to create an orb of light that erupts into a devastating explosion. As an action, you magically create an orb and hurl it at a point you choose within 150 feet, where it erupts into a sphere of radiant light for a brief but deadly instant.
Each creature in that 20-foot-radius sphere must make a Constitution saving throw against your ki save DC. On a failed save a target takes radiant damage equal to two rolls of your Martial Arts die, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature doesn't need to make the save if the creature is behind total cover that is opaque.
You can increase the sphere's damage by spending ki points up to a number equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of one). Each point you spend increases the damage by 2d6.
Sun Shield
At 17th level, you become wreathed in a luminous, magical aura that grants you resistance to radiant damage. If a creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to deal radiant damage to the creature. The radiant damage equals 5 + your Wisdom modifier.
In addition, you can use a bonus action to shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. The light shines until you extinguish it as a bonus action, fall unconscious or die. The area of bright light can illuminate even areas of magical darkness, becoming dim light at the intersection, and any spell creating that area is simply ignored while you illuminate it. The dim light has no special properties.
