Base Class: Ranger
The Wyrmrider archetype embodies a mystical bond between a wyvern and her rider. United in mind and soul, they use their spiritual connection to accomplish extraordinary feats of coordination. As the rider grows in power, so does the wyvern - developing from a young wyrmling to a full-grown monstrosity.
Wyrm Whisperer
3rd-Level Wyrmrider Feature
The bond you share with your wyvern strengthens your connection to all dragonkind, granting you understanding and empowering your instincts. You gain the following benefits:
- Tongue of Dragons. You learn to speak, read, and write Draconic.
- Natural Instincts. You gain proficiency in Animal Handling and Survival.
Wyvern Companion
3rd-Level Wyrmrider Feature
You are magically bound to a wyvern wyrmling. As an action, you can magically summon the wyvern that is bound to you. It appears in an unoccupied space of your choice within 30 feet of you.
- The wyvern is friendly to you and your companions, and it obeys your commands. See its game statistics in the accompanying Wyvern Companion stat block, which uses your proficiency bonus (PB) in several places.
- In combat, the wyvern shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the wyvern can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.
- The wyvern remains until it is reduced to 0 hit points, until you use this feature to summon the wyvern again, or until you die. Anything the wyvern was wearing or carrying is left behind when the wyvern vanishes.
- Once you summon the wyvern, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher to summon it.
Bond of Blood
7th-Level Wyrmrider Feature
Your wyvern grows into adolescence and the magical bond you share intensifies. In addition, you learn the skills necessary to become a competent rider. While your wyvern is summoned, you and the wyvern gain the following benefits:
- Wyvern Mount. The wyvern grows to Large size and becomes accustomed to you as her rider.
- Strong Grip. You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount.
- One Step. Mounting or dismounting the wyvern costs you only 5 feet over movement, rather than half your speed.
- Empowered Strikes. The wyvern's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. Also, the wyvern's attacks deals an extra 1d6 damage.
- Rider's Protection. When a creature you can see attacks your wyvern and both are within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.
Aerial Tactics
11th-Level Wyrmrider Feature
You have become a master of aerial combat and excel at working in tandem with your wyvern, especially in the sky. While your wyvern is summoned, you gain the following benefits:
- Do a Barrel Roll! As an Action, you hold tight as your wyvern loops and rolls in a helical path to shake loose attackers. Until the end of your next turn, you and your wyvern have advantage on Dexterity saving throws and all attacks against the both of you have disadvantage.
- Easy Girl! As an Action, you can remove the frightened or charmed condition from your wyvern.
- Hook 'Em! As a Bonus Action, you command your wyvern to swoop down and grab a target. On your wyvern's next turn, she can use an attack to grapple her target. Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained and the wyvern can't grapple another target.
- Dive! Dive! Dive! As a Bonus Action, you command your wyvern to dive, causing her to tuck in her wings and immediately plummet into a downward spiral. Your wyvern can move up to its speed straight down as a reaction. This movement doesn't provoke opportunity attacks. If this movement brings the wyvern in contact with the ground, she will pull up at the last moment for rough - but safe - landing.
Apex Predators
15th-Level Wyrmrider Feature
Your wyvern becomes a full-grown adult and your bond reaches the pinnacle of its power. While your wyvern is summoned, it gains the following benefits:
