Ranger
Base Class: Ranger

Sanguine Painters are an odd bunch that mix blood magic with the secret beauties of nature. They protect and watch not necessarily with crafted weapons, but with a brush. These Painters draw with the blood of their prey or their own blood, producing a strange assortment of blood and nature magic in the process.

Sanguine Painter Magic

Starting at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown in the Sanguine Painter Spells table. The spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of ranger spells you know.

Blood Brush

At 3rd level, as a result of your training into natural blood magic, you gain a blood brush. You determine the brush’s appearance and whether it is held in one hand or two; your choice has no effect on its game statistics. As an action, you can use the blood brush to produce several magical effects, which are listed below. You can use the brush’s actions a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier, regaining all expended uses on a long rest. You can also use the brush as a spellcasting focus for your ranger spells.

Stain.

You can spray a 15-foot cone of blood coating from your brush. Each creature in the cone must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC or be stained with blood  and take 2d6 blood damage. A creature stained with blood has disadvantage on all Wisdom (Perception) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks until a creature uses its action to clear the blood away off itself or another creature. On a successful save, a creature takes half damage, and is not stained.

Dye.

You hurl a glob of blood paint, dying a nearby foe. Make a ranged spell attack against a creature within 30 feet of you. On a hit, the target takes 3d6 blood damage. If they are reduced to 0 hit points because of this damage, you also gain temporary hit points equal to half the blood damage dealt, rounded down.

Wash.

You clear your brush of blood paint and regain one expended spell slot equal to or less than half your proficiency bonus, rounded down. You must have previously used Stain or Dye in the last hour to use this feature. Once you use this feature, you cannot do so again until you use Stain or Dye again.

Artist's Block

At 7th level, you learn how to use your leftover supply of blood paint to create a solid shield of hemoglobin. As a reaction, you can produce the shield and target yourself or a willing creature you can see within 30 feet of you, choosing one of the following effects each time you do so.

  • The target gains a bonus to their AC equal to your wisdom modifier until the end of your next turn.
  • The target gains 1d8 + your wisdom modifier temporary hit points.
  • If the target takes damage, you can reduce that damage by 1d6 + your wisdom modifier.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Daub and Score

At 11th level, you've learned how to attune your senses to your favored enemies' blood, giving you increased benefits against them. You gain the following, depending on which feature you gained at 1st level.

  • If you have the Favored Enemy feature, you choose 2 additional types of favored enemies, as well as 2 additional languages.
  • If you have the Favored Foe feature, marking the target as your favored enemy now does not require concentration.

In addition, you can change any damage you deal to your favored enemies to blood damage.

Circulatory Bristles

At 15th level, your blood arts reach their pinnacle. When you use your blood brush to produce a magical effect, they gain an additional effect.

Smear. Your brush's Stain effect deals an additional 2d6 blood damage, for a total of 4d6. If a stained creature has blood, it is blinded.

Discolor. Your brush's Dye effect deals an additional 3d6 blood damage, for a total of 6d6.

Spotless. You can now use your brush's Wash effect without having to use Stain or Dye beforehand.

In addition, when you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with blood damage, you regain 1 expended use of your blood brush actions, as you resupply your stash of blood paint.
