Base Class: Sorcerer
Through whatever turn of events or misfortune, you have had the soul of an Elder Elemental, a Phoenix, sealed within your body using the Seven-Fold seal. Any efforts to remove this seal would fail. Even a Wish spell would fail. The only hope of removing this seal is the intervention of a deity.
The Phoenix inside you may sleep much of the time, but their slumber is short lived. Upon choosing this subclass, you have learned to draw on the power of the soul slumbering inside your body. As you do, it begins to wake up. Are you friendly with them? Do they scorn you for being their prison? Perhaps your Phoenix sees you as a second chance at life...
Whatever the case may be, the Phoenix inside you has much power to offer their host, and you are able to take more and more as you gain levels in this class. Consider how the mind, soul, and power of the Phoenix effects you. Do they alter the way you feel or think? Do they change the way your body looks? Do you have conversations with them in your head or your dreams? Do they manage to take control of your body sometimes? Maybe you allow them to take control of your body to allow them to stretch their caged wings... Surely more can be gained from befriending the creature...or perhaps you are using them for the limitless magical potential stored within a Phoenix's soul.
Phoenix Soul
As the magic of your contained phoenix flows through your body, it causes physical traits to emerge. At 1st level, your hit point maximum increases by 1 and increases by 1 again whenever you gain a level in this class.
Phoenix Agility: When you aren’t wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
Phoenix Sorcery
1st-level Phoenix Soul feature
You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Phoenix Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.
Phoenix Spells
| Sorcerer Level | Spells |
|---|---|
| 1st | Produce Flame, Hellish Rebuke |
| 3rd | Flame Blade |
| 5th | Glyph of Warding |
| 7th | Fire Shield |
| 9th | Flame Strike |
The Seven-Fold Seal
Starting at 6th level, the sigils containing the Phoenix inside you have begun shifting and allowing more of their power to seep through the cracks in the cage containing them. When you cast a Sorcerer spell using a spell slot of 1st level or higher, you gain an amount of Phoenix Soul Energy equal to the level of the spell slot used. Additionally, when you spend Sorcery Points, you gain an amount of Phoenix Soul Energy equal to the Sorcery Points expended. Once the total amount of Phoenix Soul Energy meets or exceeds a seal's threshold, as listed in the Seven Seals table, the seal cracks and you temporarily gain access to a new feature.
Your Phoenix Soul Energy pool resets to 0 when you take a long rest.
| Phoenix Soul Energy | SEAL AND EFFECT |
| 5 | First Seal (Burning Talon): You may expend two Sorcery Points when you cast Flame Blade to remove its concentration requirement. If you use the Extended spell metamagic when you cast Flame Blade, you increase the duration to 1 hour instead of 20 minutes. |
| 10 | Second Seal (Dust-off) As a reaction after taking damage from any source, you cause flaming phoenix feathers to sprout from your back. You fly 40 feet to an unoccupied space you can see without provoking attacks of opportunity. Each creature of your choice within 10 feet of you when you take off takes fire damage equal to your Sorcerer level. Once you use this trait, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest unless you expend three Sorcery Points. |
| 20 | Third Seal (Potent Spellcasting): Phoenix power bursts through the cracks in your seals. When you deal fire damage to a creature with a cantrip, Hellish Rebuke, or Flame Blade, that creature takes additional fire damage equal to your spellcasting modifier. |
| 30 | Fourth Seal (Phoenix Absorption): When you are subjected to an effect which deals fire or poison damage that allows you to make a saving throw to take only half damage, you instead take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, and only half damage if you fail. |
| 40 | Fifth Seal (Immolation Spellcasting): Fire power flares through the cracks in your seals. When you deal fire damage to a creature with a spell of 3rd level or higher, that creature takes an additional 1d10 fire damage at the start of each of its turns until the target or an adjacent creature uses all of their movement to douse the fire. |
| 50 | Sixth Seal (Fire Form): By turning your body into pure fire, you can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. Any creature that touches you or hits you with a melee attack while within 5 feet of you takes 1d10 fire damage. In addition, you can enter a creature’s space and stop there. The first time you enter a creature’s space on a turn, that creature takes 1d10 fire damage. With a touch, you can also ignite flammable objects that aren’t worn or carried (no action required). |
| 70 | Seventh Seal (Born from the Ashes): Your Seven-Fold seal radiates a powerful and glowing flame. All of your skin cracks with orangish white light, and the faint sounds of the screeching Phoenix can be heard in the air around you. By expending 70 of your Phoenix Soul energy, you are able to cast the Shapechange spell on yourself but may only Shapechange into a Phoenix. This version of Shapechange does not require the material component or concentration. You may still cast Sorcerer spells while in this form and expend Sorcery points as normal. If the Fiery Death and Rebirth ability of the Phoenix triggers while you are in this form, it triggers as normal, but you may designate two creatures who may pick up the cinder without taking damage. Your body hatches from the egg-shaped cinder and gains the benefits of a long rest. However, you may not activate the Seventh Seal (Born from the Ashes) for 1d4 days after hatching from the egg. |
Phoenix Bond
Through rivalry or friendship, hatred or love, the imprisoned Phoenix within your body has full respect for you as an individual. The two of you now work in more coordinated concert for the mutual benefit of both - permanently unlocking the first two seals.
Beginning at 14th level, your Phoenix Soul Energy pool resets to 10 when you take a long rest instead of 0.
One with the Phoenix
Starting at 18th level, the respect between Phoenix and host has deepened into a genuine, inseparable bond. The two souls now work as if one within your body. As such, you gain the following traits:
- For every 10 years that pass, your body ages only 1 year.
- Your Phoenix Soul Energy pool resets to 20 when you take a long rest instead of 10.
