... The raging goliath charged at the lone, cloaked swordsman, yet he did not falter. He waited paitently, hand on the grip of his blade, and then in the blink of an eye he appeared behind the towering opponent, his sword now unsheathed. For a brief moment, silence filled the air, before blood splattered everywhere, the goliath dropping dead on his knees
As a student of the Way of the Mantis, you use the predatorial nature of the mantis as inspiration of your martial artist. You do not believe that strength or size is key, instead your expertise lays in swift strike with the shortsword and sickle. You use your wisdom to read your opponents, looking for openings and weak points, while also leaving yourself with as few openings as possible.
Imitation of Predator
Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you prowess with the shortsword and sickle in which this Way requires increases. As such, you gain +1 to attack and damage rolls with shortswords and sickles, or monk weapons that uses these weapons as their basis. However, using any other weapon will not allow you to use this subclass' features
Praying Mantis
Also, at 3rd level, you learn to read the openings of your opponent. As a bonus actions, sheathe your sword or backhand your sickle, and lower yourself into a defensive stand. If a melee attack against you misses while you are in this stance, you can use a reaction to make an opportunity, striking your foe when they are compleatly open. This attack uses both your DEX and WIS modifier for the attack role as well as the damage roll
Ghost Mantis
At 6th level, your understanding of the mantis deepens, and you Praying Mantis form develops. Because of this, you can, as a reaction, spend a Ki point to gain one of the following effects:
- Make the opportunity attack of the Praying Mantis stance before the opponents attack. If this hits, the opponent gains disadvantage on the upcomming attack
- Make an additional attack of the Praying Mantis stance
For the sake of ruling, the reaction of spending the Ki point is not prohibited by the rule of only 1 reaction before your next turn.
Transcendence of Predator
Beginning at 11th level, you can as an action compleatly empty your mind, entering the state of a mantis on the hunt. While in this state, you have advantage on DEX saving throws, and enemies have disadvantage on attacks against you. The effects of Praying Mantis and Ghost Mantis can also be used in this state. After entering this state, you can only do normal movement for the rest of the turn. This effect at the start of your next turn.
You must complete a short or long rest in order to use this feature again.
Devil Flower Mantis
At 17th level, you have overcome the limitations of the mantis, and truely mastered your martial art. As an actions, you can sheathe your shortsword or sickle, then quickly unsheathe it again in a flashing movement. Enemies in a 20 feet radius around you must make a DEX saving throw equal to 14 + your WIS modifier, or suffer 6d8 + WIS modifier slashing damage. They take half as much damage on a succesful saving throw.
