Monk
Base Class: Monk

A Way of the Wall monk is a shield based subclass. It focuses on keeping many of the base capabilities of the monk while also expanding on the normal playstyle to allow a monk to be a true defensive wall despite their lower hit point total. A Way of the Wall monk can be an annoyance to enemies and a boon to allies.

Made some minor changes to correct some oversights when adding new features which made old features redundant.

The Best Offense

  • You gain proficiency with shields.
  • Shields can be used as a monk weapon.
  • Shields no longer disable Unarmored Defense.
  • You can spend a ki point to have an attack on an ally within 5 ft of you target you instead.
  • Deflect Missile now adds your AC to the subtracted damage. In addition it no longer requires a ki point to make a ranged attack with the projectile.

Ever Faithful

You have gained complete faith in your shield. It acts as more of an extension of your body rather than a tool to be used.

  • Your shield counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage. In addition, if your shield is magical you can add its bonus to to hit and damage to not only attacks with the shield, but your unarmed strikes as well.
  • You are a shield in body and mind. You gain the ability to cast Shield and Shield of Faith. After you cast Shield or Shield of Faith you can not cast either until after a short or long rest.
  • You may now use Deflect Missile to reflect spell attacks which target you.

Unto A Thing of Iron

  • Your mastery over the concept of defense now grants you advantage on all strength, dexterity, and constitution saving throws. In addition you may add your proficiency bonus to any non saving throw check which uses strength, dexterity, or constitution which does not already do so. (I.e. if you have proficiency in athletics you do not get to add your bonus to the roll twice).
  • Your mastery over the concept of protection allows you to take an attack meant for an ally. You may use a ki point and your reaction to swap places with an ally within 100 ft. of you when they are targeted by an attack or spell effect. This attack or spell effect now targets you instead. In addition you no longer need to spend a ki point to have an attack which targets an ally within 5 ft of you target you instead.

Immovable Object

  • You  may now use 1 ki point to negate any effect which would alter your position or state of mind. This can be movement, being knocked prone, frightened, sleep, charmed, etc. In addition, you can no longer be disarmed of your shield and spells can no longer directly target it.
  • You are always on guard. You no longer take levels of exhaustion from skipping long rests. Your Patient Defense also no long requires a ki point.
