Base Class: Sorcerer
Your power draws from the immortal flame that fuels the legendary phoenix. You or your ancestors perhaps rendered a phoenix a great service, or you were born in its presence. Whatever the cause, a shard of the phoenix’s power dwells within you.
That power is a mixed blessing. Like the mythical creature, you can invoke fiery energy and gain the ability to cheat death itself. This power comes at a cost. The fire within you seethes, demanding to be unleashed. You sometimes find yourself absentmindedly feeding fires. You can’t bear to allow a fire to sputter out. You feel most comfortable while holding a lit torch or sitting in front of a campfire.
More importantly, this gift comes with no special protection from fire. You are as vulnerable as any other creature to fiery magic, including your own. Phoenix sorcerers can use their powers to pull themselves back from the brink of death, and all too often their own, rash nature or reliance on destructive magic is what puts them there in the first place.
Such sorcerers are wanderers by necessity. The volatile nature of their magic makes other folk nervous. If a fire breaks out in town, a phoenix sorcerer had best flee, whether guilty or not. Fire is a dangerous force, and phoenix sorcerers have a reputation (deserved or not) for reckless behavior, confident that the essence of the phoenix can save them.
One With Flame
1st-level Phoenix feature
Your affinity with the elemental plane of fire has granted you some boons. You can speak, read, and write Primordial. Knowing this language allows you to understand and be understood by those who speak its dialects: Ignan, Aquan, Auran, and Terran. Additionally, as an action, you can magically ignite a flammable object you touch with your hand that isn't being worn or carried.
Ember Step
1st-level Phoenix feature
The spark of flame that dwells within you is able to react and quickly pull you out of danger. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to teleport a distance up to your movement speed. If a creature caused the damage and the creature was within 10 feet of you before you teleported, that creature takes fire damage equal to your Charisma modifier.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Proficiency bonus and regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Mantle of Flame
6th-level Phoenix feature
You can unleash the phoenix fire that blazes within you into a swirling vortext of flame around you.
As a bonus action, small birds of flame begin swirling in a 30 foot radius around you. For up to 1 minute, you gain the following benefits:
- Bright light fills the 30-foot radius and dim light extends for an additional 30 feet.
- When you activate this effect, and as a bonus action on subsequent turns, all creatures of your choice within the 30 foot radius must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 2d6 fire damage, or half on a success. This damage increases to 3d6 at 12th level, and 4d6 at 18th level.
- Once per turn, when you cast a spell that deals fire damage, you gain a bonus to one damage roll equal to your Charisma modifier.
- When you end your turn with this effect active, reduce your current hit points by a number equal to half your level in this class, rounded up.
This effect ends early if you are incapacitated or you end it as a bonus action.
Nourishing Fire
14th-level Phoenix feature
The energy you expend in manipulating fire warms and nourishes you, sometimes bringing you back from the brink of death. When you expend a spell slot to cast a spell that includes a fire damage roll, you regain hit points equal to the spell’s level + your Charisma modifier.
Additionally, If you would be reduced to 0 hit points, you can use your reaction to draw on the spark of the phoenix. You are instead reduced to 1 hit point, and at the start of your turn, you regain hit points equal to your sorcerer level + twice your Charisma modifier.
If you use this feature while under the effects of your Mantle of Flame, you instead regain the hit points immediately and your Mantle of Flame ends.
Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Form of the Phoenix
18th-level Phoenix feature
You have mastered the spark of fire that dances within you, your body used to being consumed by the flames and being restored, as well as the sparks that may dance in others. You gain the following benefits:
- You have resistance to fire damage.
- If you have already used your reaction and take damage, you can expend 2 sorcery points to immediately use Ember Step. This can occur only once per creature's turn.
Additionally, while your Mantle of Flame is active you gain the following effects:
- You have a flying speed of 40 feet and you can hover.
- If you deal fire damage to a creature, you can ignore any resistances to fire damage it may have. If the creature would be immune to fire damage, treat it as though it has resistance instead.
