Sorcerer
Base Class: Sorcerer

Your magical powers burn with fiery might and power. Such power comes from the most powerful of fire elementals, the phoenix. You may have been born in the presence of these majestic creatures, or perhaps survived being in the range of the incinerating rebirth process the phoenix often undertakes. However it was you were exposed, you now contain an ember of the raw primordial power from the elemental plane of fire that the phoenix embodies.

Phoenix fire sorcerers must learn to control the fire now coursing through their body, as failure to do so could see themselves, and the one they care for go up in uncontrollable flames.

Phoenix Spells

1st-level Phoenix Fire feature

You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Phoenix Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be a conjuration or an evocation spell from the sorcerer, warlock, or wizard spell list.

Additionally, as a bonus action you can cause your body to starting glowing like a burning flame. While active, you shed bright light up to 10 feet, with an additional 10 feet of dim light. The colour of the light you produce is up to you and you produce a slight amount of heat but not enough to burn anything. This light lasts for up to an hour, or until you’re incapacitated, you die, or you dismiss it as a bonus action.

Phoenix Magic

1st-level Phoenix Fire feature

You learn the produce flame and control flames cantrips. Each cantrip counts as a sorcerer cantrip for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer cantrips you know. The range for both these cantrips is increased by an additional 30 feet.

Burning Fury

6th-level Phoenix Fire feature

The mystic fire flowing in your veins can be used to strengthen your body temporarily. Whenever you cast a spell that deals fire damage and costs a spell slot to cast, you can as a bonus action spend two sorcery point to gain temporary HP equal to your sorcerer level. These temporary hit points last until you complete either a short or long rest.

Wings of Fire

14th-level Phoenix Fire feature

As a bonus action, you can now produce a pair of wings made of fire from your back. While the wings are present, you have a flying speed of 40 feet. The wings last for 1 minute, or if you’re incapacitated, you die, or you dismiss them as a bonus action. Once you have used this feature you don't regain the ability to summon your wings until after you have taken a long rest or spend three sorcery points to summon them again.

If you end your turn within 10 feet of a creature while the wings are active, you can choose to deal fire damage to one creature of your choice equal to your sorcerer level.

Rise from the Ashes

18th-level Phoenix Fire feature

The power of the phoenix’s ability to be reborn by fire starts to develop within in. While you can’t be reborn like a true phoenix, you do gain the following traits.

  • If a spell, such as raise dead, has the sole effect of restoring you to life (but not undeath), the caster doesn’t need material components to cast the spell on you.
  • You gain immunity to fire damage.
  • You gain advantage on all death saving throws.
  • If you do die, your body now explodes into a devastating blast of fire. Each creature in a 20-foot radius sphere centred on your body must make a dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC. Each creature takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. Your body is then reduced to a pile of magical ash from which you may still be restored from without any ill-affect.
