Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

Insect Glaive Hunters are fast and fluid, with a unique aerial moveset. On the ground, they have rapid combos with good range, and jumping off high edges in the environment grants them access to aerial attacks. However, the Insect Glaive Hunter can also use their glaive to vault into the air, which allows them access to their aerial attacks without the help of the environment. While the aerial attacks can deal damage, they can also be used to reposition on the battlefield or chase down a foe, making the Insect Glaive Hunter one of the most mobile fighters on the battlefield.

The other half of the Insect Glaive Hunter's arsenal is the Kinsect. The Kinsect is a large insect that sits on the hunter's arm. The hunter can command the Kinsect to go out, hit an enemy to collect Extracts, and then return. Four types of Extracts are available: Red, Orange, White and Green. Red provides a boost in damage, Orange buffs your defense, White increases movement speed, and Green restores health. While holding the Red, White, and Orange Extracts together, the Hunter enters a Triple Buffed state which increases the Hunter's power even more.

Kinsect Call

3rd-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you learn the rite known as the Kinsect Call-- a ritual dance you may perform with a glaive, halberd, lance, or pike which enables you to summon a kinsect. The kinsect manifests in an unoccupied space that you can see within ten of you before promptly perching on your arm or shoulder. This creature uses the Kinsect (3rd level) stat block. You also choose a Kinsect Type, which determines the creature's type, special properties, and appearance. The creature disappears when it drops to 0 hit points or when you dismiss it as an action. Performing this rite to summon a kinsect takes 5 minutes, but doing so while you already have a kinsect summoned takes only 1 minute and allows you to alter the kinsect's type, but not to summon a new one.

At 3rd level you may only have one kinsect summoned at any time, but starting at 18th level you may have two.

The kinsect is an ally to you and your companions. In combat, the creature shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. As a bonus action on your turn you may issue commands to it, which it obeys on its turn. Lacking any commands, it uses its speed to move within 5 ft. of the nearest enemy, then uses either the Maul or Cull action on that enemy, depending on its Kinsect type. The kinsect understands the intent of your commands, but does not speak or understand any languages. The kinsect has a special statistic called Stamina, which is depleted by certain actions the kinsect uses. If the kinsect has no stamina points remaining at the beginning of its turn or after using its action, it spends its turn moving as close to you as its movement allows, resting on you via its Hunter Harmony special trait if it reaches your space.

At later levels. When you reach later levels in this class, your Kinsects use different stat blocks. They use the Kinsect (7th level) stat block at 7th level, the Kinsect (10th level) block at 10th, the Kinsect (15th level) block at 15th, and the Kinsect (18th level) block at 18th level.

Extracts

3rd-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

Your kinsect has the ability to collect extracts from enemies it damages and deliver them into you.

Extracts are unique substances-- made when the kinsect mixes its own secretions with natural components of your enemies-- that your body can metabolize thanks to the training and rituals that have made you an Insect Glaive Hunter. When your kinsect delivers extracts to you, you use them within your body. The red, white, and orange extracts may be "held" within you for up to 5 rounds, and provide you a beneficial effect for that duration. In contrast, the green extract may not be held, and instead provides you an instant benefit before expiring. You may hold up to three extracts at any time, but only one of each color, and receiving another extract of a color you already hold replaces the one you are holding. For example, if you hold a red and orange extract and your kinsect delivers to you another red extract, you lose the red extract you are holding and gain the new one.

While holding the red extract, you gain a bonus to the damage rolls of attacks you make using Strength equal to half your proficiency bonus, rounded down. While holding the white extract, you gain a bonus to movement equal to 5 feet. While holding the orange extract, your Armor Class increases by 1. When you receive green extract from your kinsect, you regain 1d4 hit points.

When receiving an extract from your kinsect causes you to be holding each of the red, white, and orange extracts, you enter a Triple Buffed state, increasing the power of each extract. Upon becoming Triple Buffed, the durations of each of your held extracts reset to 5 rounds. While Triple Buffed, your red extract damage bonus equals your proficiency bonus, your white extract movement bonus is 10 feet, your orange extract AC bonus is 2, and green extracts restore 2d4 hit points instead. Also while in this state, you can make one extra attack when you take the Attack action on your turn, in addition to any Extra Attack feature you may benefit from.

Weapon Bond

7th-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

At 7th level, you learn an ancient ritual that creates a magical bond between yourself and a glaive, halberd, lance, or pike. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. The weapon must be within your reach throughout the ritual, at the conclusion of which you touch it and forge the bond.

Once you have bonded a weapon to yourself, you can’t be disarmed of it unless you are incapacitated. If it is on the same plane of existence, you can summon that weapon as a bonus action on your turn, causing it to teleport instantly to your hand.

You can have only two bonded weapons at any time. If you attempt to bond with a third weapon, you must break the bond with one of the other two.

Vault

7th-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

Starting at 7th level, you gain the ability to perform the aerial attacks that hunters of your kind are famous for. As a bonus action using a glaive, halberd, lance, or pike, you launch yourself a number of feet into the air up to half your base walking speed and begin gliding by twirling the weapon. While gliding you may move 2 feet horizontally for every 1 foot you descend. You may only descend a total number of feet equal to your base walking speed, at which point you stop gliding and begin falling. Failing to land before the end of your turn also causes you to stop gliding and begin falling. You may also initiate this gliding with your weapon after jumping off a ledge or similar point above ground.

While gliding in this way, you do not provoke opportunity attacks from creatures of Medium or smaller size, and creatures of Large or larger size have disadvantage on opportunity attacks made against you. Being hit by an attack while gliding causes you to stop gliding and begin falling.

Additionally, you may use the Attack action while gliding, using the weapon you are gliding with to perform an aerial attack. You may push yourself an additional 5 feet into the air each time you hit with an attack while gliding in this way. You may not take any other action which requires the use of your hands.

You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, regaining expended uses on a short or long rest.

At later levels. This feature improves at 15th level in the following ways:

  • The maximum height you can vault into the air is equal to your base walking speed.
  • The additional height you can push yourself into the air after an aerial attack is 10 feet.
  • The total feet you can descend before your glide ends and you begin to fall is twice your base walking speed.

Descending Thrust

10th-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

At any time you are gliding and are above a creature, you can use your reaction to make a special attack called a Descending Thrust. You end your glide, immediately falling and descending upon the creature, and make an attack roll with your weapon.

On a hit, you take no damage from the fall and do not land prone. Your attack does additional damage of the weapon's type equal to 1d6 per 10 feet you fell, to a maximum of 20d6. If the weapon does more than one type of damage on a hit, you choose which of those types the additional damage is. If you fell 30 or more feet for this attack and the creature you hit is Large or smaller, it must make a Strength saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your STR modifier) or be knocked prone.

If you miss your attack, you take damage from the fall as normal, but you are not knocked prone unless you are reduced to 0 hit points.

Improved Extracts

15th-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

At 15th level, you consume your extracts to greater effect. While Triple Buffed (holding a red, white, and orange extract simultaneously), you have advantage on saving throws against effects that would give you any of the following conditions: blinded, deafened, frightened, prone, and stunned.

Grand Kinsect Call

18th-level Insect Glaive Hunter feature

At 18th level, your devotion to this path has forged an unbreakable bond with kinsects, allowing you to tap into the full extent of the ancient bond between kinsects and hunters. When you use the Summon and Alter actions of your Kinsect Call feature, you may summon or alter two kinsects rather than one.
