Base Class: Barbarian
Varangian Guard is an elite unit of the Achaian army tasked with protecting the Emperor. These warriors hailing from the Northern Wastes are among the deadliest and most ruthless fighters to roam the battlefields under the Achaian banner. Clad in heavy armor from head to toe, armed with the infamous palekyphoros, a two-handed ax, there is no man or beast who can stand in the way of these "Imperial Berserkers"...
In the year of Creator 887. a group of Norscan outcasts led by exiled Ysgardian Jarl Aerikr the Red, reached the city of Alexipolis, the capital of the Achaian Empire. Already proven fighters they offered their service to Emperor Anastasios the Wise in exchange for monthly payments in gold. Battle after battle they earned gold and glory in the name of the Emperor and soon were elevated to the status of his personal bodyguards. They swore a blood oath to serve the Emperor and the Throne, an oath and a tradition that remains to this day. Their loyalty and ruthlessness are the stuff of legends. Each spring there is a flow of new recruits of the Varangians in Alexipolis. There are men of the Hammer and the Cross, a few even of the Moon, some are searching for glamour and glory, and some are concealing their royal descent. In the Achaian tongue, they are called "Palekiphoroi Barbaroi" - "The ax bearing foreigners" from afar they come. They fight like unstoppable berserkers from the North, participating in the "Black Dance" or "Berserkergang", but this is combined with Achaian weaponry and armor, and the combination produces the deadliest guard in the known world...the Varangian Guard.
Crow of the Golden City
Varangian Guard receives the armaments and armor from the royal Achaian office. After the rigorous training and many battles he is accustomed to his armor and trusty ax.
When you choose this path at the 3rd level you receive a masterwork greataxe and cataphract armor as a part of your Varangnian attire. Cataphract armor is a mixture of lamellar and scaled armor used by the elite soldiers in the Achaian empire. It is a heavy armor piece that provides protection for most of the body parts, head to toe. It gives its wearer an AC of 18 much like full plate armor.
You gain the ability to use your Rage and Fast Movement class features while wearing heavy armor. Furthermore, while you Rage you gain immunity to charm and fear effects. However, while your rage lasts you must attack the nearest visible enemy, if there are no enemies within sight you attack the nearest target. You can no longer end rage voluntarily and must bypass Wisdom check DC 12 as a bonus action to not attack anyone and end the Rage on your turn.
