Monk
Base Class: Monk

Most monastic traditions avoid training their students to wield shields as having one at the ready will often disrupt the flow of one's ki. The monks who follow The Way of Protection have dedicated themselves to overcoming this burden. Monks of this tradition train to flow their ki through shields, and protect allies from whatever may be thrown at them.

Shield Technique

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with shields. You can spend a bonus action and a number of ki points equal up to your wisdom modifier to don/doff a shield you are carrying and use it in conjunction with Martial Arts, Unarmored Movement and Unarmored Defense for a number of minutes equal to twice the number of ki points spent.

Shield Technique receives bonuses at 6th, 11th, and 17th levels.

Guardian's Grace

At 6th level, your defensive training allows you to come to the aid of those around you. While under the effect of Shield Technique, when a creature you can see attacks a target other than you within 10ft of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.

Additionally while under the effect of Shield Technique, wielding a shield does not count against your free hands for the purposes of monk weapons and Deflect Missiles.

Swift Protection

Beginning at 11th level, if you are not incapacitated, you can use your reaction when an ally is forced to make a Dexterity saving throw to spend up to 5 ki points, move up to half your speed and add a bonus equal to your shield's AC bonus plus half the number of ki points spent (rounded up) to the saving throw by interposing your shield between your ally and the source of the effect.

Guardian of the Faithful

Starting at 17th level, you learn to maintain a constant flow of ki through your shield, Shield Technique no longer costs ki points. You can also imbue a portion of your protections into your allies. At the end of a short or long rest, you can spend 1 ki point per ally to grant them the benefit of the Shield of Faith spell. When you use this effect you must choose whether you concentrate on the spell on your allies concentrate for themselves, you may not choose a combination of both.
