Base Class: Fighter
Known for dual wielding swords with a keen edge and spirit, the Ethereal Blades watch over the line between the Material and Ethereal planes. The tradition started with the heavily forested Samtsha Ri mountain region's warriors. The mountain range is alive with an otherworldly beauty, and is said to be especially close to the border of the spirit realm and the Ethereal Plane. The culture's shamans were of the highest caste, but the warriors- the Sem Srung- still held an important place in the society, being guardians and guides along the pathways through the Ethereal Plane. Their connection to the Ethereal Plane made them more quick and elusive, and they sharpened this into the techniques used in the tradition today.
The training of the tradition is strict and ascetic, exercising body, mind, and spirit in drills that can seem obtuse and even embarrassing to the uninitiated. Once prospective warriors have proven their aptitude and capability, they are formally brought into the order with the Samtsha Gom rite, which involves fasting and meditation and ingesting the psychedelic sem phu that is normally reserved for the shamans. If they survive the ordeal and a trip into the Ethereal Plane- which not all do- then they are acclaimed as full Ethereal Blades, and their journey into the mysteries of the plane truly begins.
Sem phu and contact with the Ethereal Plane often leave a mark on a person, such as a shock of white hair or an odd-colored eye. You may have had a strange dream where you encountered an Ethereal Blade, or perhaps you came from a Sem Srung temple and have finally decided to pursue it teachings, but in any case as an Ethereal Blade your growing supernatural presence and mastery have set you apart. There are many dangers beyond the Material Plane, and it may be your destiny to walk across the border and vanquish them once and for all.
Spirit Slash
One of the basic techniques of the tradition, the Spirit Slash enables the user to strike with supernatural speed and precision. Part Material and part Ethereal, the warrior and blade are able to slip past defenses. You gain a +Wisdom modifier bonus to the damage and attack roll of the next two attacks you make this turn. If they both connect, the target takes an additional 2d6 damage and you can take the Disengage, Dash, or Dodge actions as part of this action. You can use this action proficiency times a long rest.
Borderlands Veil
Beginning when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, your contact with the Ethereal Plane has changed you, and opened up your senses. It has given you a minor precognitive awareness, which is used in the Ethereal Plane to make sense of your surroundings. Now when unarmored, your AC is 13+Wisdom modifier. You can also draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally be able to draw or stow only one.
Ethereal Instincts
Starting at 7th level, your grasp of the Ethereal Plane's substance and magic has become instinctive, giving you insights into phenomena in the world around you and making even your most simple attacks hard to stop. You can add half proficiency rounded up to any Wisdom check you make that doesn’t already use your proficiency bonus, and you have a bonus to Initiative equal to your Wisdom modifier. Your weapon attacks count as magical for the purposes of overcoming resistances.
Awakened Lucidity
At 10th level, your connection to the Ethereal Plane has reached a new level of clarity, and you can now call on that link to phase in and out of battle. You can use your reaction to deflect a missile or weapon when you are hit by a weapon attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10+your Wisdom modifier+your Fighter level.
If you reduce the damage to 0, you can use your Spirit Slash feature as part of this action without expending a use.
Ghost Walk
Starting at 15th level, you are able to stand on two planes at once. One of the most closely guarded secrets of the tradition, the Ghost Walk enables you to move and see with a supernatural grace. You can move through but not end your turn in the spaces of other creatures. When you take the Dash, Dodge, or Disengage actions, you become partially obscured until the end of your next turn. You can see into the Ethereal Plane out to 30 feet, and your weapon attacks can affect creatures on the Ethereal Plane.
Phantom Razor
At 18th level, you learn the Phantom Razor technique. It allows you to harness the Ethereal Plane to give a ghostly edge to your weapons and to briefly circumvent the Material Plane's bonds of time. You gain +Wisdom modifier damage on melee weapon attacks. Once per turn on a critical hit, you can make two weapon attacks without advantage instead of dealing extra damage; if one of these bonus attacks would critical hit, you instead regain a use of Spirit Slash.
